PC Server 330 - Installing Windows NT Server 4.0 (8640-PB0, PM0, PT0)

What you will need:
- Flat head screw driver

- Supported hard drive (refer to http://www.us.pc.ibm.com/compat/ for a list of supported options and part numbers for your IBM Server).

- Licensed copy of Microsoft NT Server 4.0 (note: if you plan to install using a copy of the CD instead of an original, you will have to install using diskettes. Copies are not bootable).

- Ethernet Support Diskette. This diskette can be downloaded from the IBM BBS or FTP site (see next section for more information).

- PC ServeRAID Device Driver and Utilities Diskette Version 2.23A (part number 4306765) , and the latest version of PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette Version 2.23 (part number 4227013). These diskettes ship with system or you can get the filenames 0511955.EXE and 4227013.EXE from the IBM BBS, FTP site, or Web site (see next section for more information).

- Windows NT 4.0 Device Drivers for S3 TRIO 64V+ Diskette V1.01.01 (part number 4307001). This diskette ships with system or you can get the filename 4307001.EXE from the IBM BBS, FTP site, or Web site (see next section for more information).

- One blank diskette. Label it Emergency Repair Diskette.

- Microsoft NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 (filename NT4SP3_I.EXE). This is available from Microsoft's web site or FTP site (see next section for more information).

(For users who are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and install process, jump to Appendix A)

Setting Up the Hardware:
1. Looking at the rear of the system, loosen the 3 thumb screws on the right of the system and remove the side access panel.
2. For the initial install, it is recommended that you remove all adapters and devices that are not required to get the base operating system installed. (For example, if installing multiple network adapters, only install one at this time). If a tape drive or external SCSI devices will be used, just disconnect them temporarily. After the operating system is booting without errors, add these devices one at the time. This procedure streamlines the install process.
3. Verify that the SCSI cable (part number 76H3452) runs from the on-board RAID controller to the top of the hot-swap backplane, and that there is a second SCSI cable (part number 76H3454) running from the bottom of the hot-swap backplane to the CD-ROM.
4. Install the desired number of hot-swap hard drives into the hot-swap bays beginning at the top and proceeding downward.

Setting Up the BIOS:
1. Power on the system and press F1 to enter Configuration/Diagnostics.
2. Press Enter to select Configuration/Setup Utility.
3. Select Date and Time and verify the settings. Then press Esc to return to the main menu.
4. Select Start Options and verify that the First Startup Device is set to CD-ROM, the Second Startup Device is set to Diskette Drive 0, and the
Third Startup Device is set to Hard Disk 0. Press Esc to return to the main menu.
5. If any ISA devices are installed (or will be installed) that need IRQs (or other system resources such as I/O ports or memory) reserved, choose Plug and Play and then the desired resource type you wish to reserve. Change the desired resource from Plug and Play to ISA Legacy. From the Plug and Play window, press Esc and select Save Settings. Press Enter and then select Exit Setup. Press Esc and Enter to select Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility.
6. The server will reboot (If you receive a 162 Configuration Change has Occurred message during post, press Enter to select Continue, then Enter again. At the Diagnostic/Setup Utility window, press <ESCAPE> and then Enter to select Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility.

Configuring Arrays Using the PC ServeRAID II Adapter:
1. Upon initial boot, an error message similar to the following may be encountered:



- Following drives not responding (oldstate:newstate:ch:bay)
(ONL:DDD:2:1)(ONL:DDD:2:2)
- Identifiers for the following drives do not match configuration ...


Press <F10> -Exit without change and boot to the PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette Version 2.23 selecting Advanced Functions, then
Init/View/Synchronize Config and finally Initialize Configuration. Confirm initialization request with a Yes.
2. After initializing, exit to the main menu and select Create/Delete/Copy Log Drive.
3. Select Create Disk Array.
4. Use the arrow keys to select RDY drives for each new array. Press Enter on each highlighted drive to add it to the array.
5. Press Esc when finished selecting drives.
6. Select Define Logical Drive.
7. Select an array to define a drive on.
8. Specify the raid level for the new logical drive.
9. Specify size for the new logical drive, and confirm with a Yes.
10. A message stating that All logical drives must be INITIALIZED after being created pops up press Enter. Confirm command to initialize the new logical drive with a Yes. If a RAID-5 logical drive was defined, a message stating that All RAID-5 logical drives must be SYNCHRONIZED after initialization pops up. Confirm synchronization of the new logical drive with a Yes. The synchronization process may take several hours to complete per logical drive.
11. After synchronization, Esc to the main menu. Choose Advanced Functions, and then backup IPS ServeRAID Config.
12. Verify that the PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette Version 2.23 is not write-protected.
13. Enter the file name you wish to save the Config to, or press Enter to accept the default, then Yes to confirm.
14. Exit the utility, ignoring the message to back up the RAID configuration, again confirming with a Yes.

Running the Windows NT Server 4.0 Installation Program Using the Integrated PC ServeRAID II:
1. Insert Microsoft Windows NT Server CD into the CD-ROM drive and reboot the server.
2. Press Ctrl+I when prompted during Boot.
3. Select Advanced Functions.
4. Select Boot CD-ROM and INT13 Extensions.
5. Set BIOS Support for Bootable CD-ROM to Yes.
6. Select Exit three times, and power down the server.
7. Press F6 when the message Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration appears.
8. Press S to specify mass storage media device, then highlight Other and press Enter.
9. Insert PC ServeRAID Device Driver and Utilities Diskette Version 2.23A into the floppy drive and press Enter twice to accept IBM PC ServeRAID.
10. If you have added additional Disk controllers, press S and follow the previous instructions for installing additional drivers, or press Enter twice and then C to continue installation.
11. You may receive the message that Setup has determined that one or more of your hard disks has more than 1024 cylinders, press Enter and continue. Both the Adaptec 7880U/W and the PC ServeRAID II utilize extended DOS translation to accommodate this configuration.
12. Page Down the license agreement and press F8 to agree and continue installation.
13. Press Enter at the No changes: the above list matches my computer screen.
14. Press C to create a partition, then enter its size (The partition size should range between 300MB and no greater than 2000 MB for FAT partitions, and 300 MB and no greater than 4000 MB for NTFS partitions. If is recommended that the partition be at least 1000 MB if you plan on installing the full BackOffice Suite on the installation partition.) and press Enter. Press Enter again to install to the specified partition.
15. Select FAT or NTFS file system and press Enter to format the installation partition.
16. Specify an installation directory and press Enter (the default is C:\WINNT).
17. Press Enter to allow Setup to check your hard drive, or Esc to skip the examination.
18. Setup then copies files to your hard drive. Remove the Windows NT Server CD-ROM from the drive when prompted and press Enter to reboot the server.
19. You will receive a Virus Warning message on reboot, this is normal. Select Change is expected. The system then runs chkdsk and reboots a second time.
20. Press Enter at the Windows NT Setup Screen.
21. Enter your name and organization and press Enter.
22. Enter your CD Key located on the back of the CD jewel box and press Enter.
23. Enter your number of users Per Server or click Per Seat and press Enter.
24. Enter your computer name and press Enter.

NOTE: The only way to change Server Type is to reinstall, so choose carefully. Server types include:

Primary Domain Controller (PDC):
This server tracks changes made to accounts of all computers on the network. Only one is necessary per domain.

Backup Domain Controller (BDC):
This server acts as a backup to the PDC. Multiple BDCs are allowed per domain.

Stand Alone Server:
This is a server that serves as neither a PDC or BDC.

25. Select the Server Type and press Enter.
26. Enter the Administrator Account password and press Enter.
27. Press Enter to create an Emergency Repair Diskette.
28. Select or deselect components by clicking the check boxes next to components and press Enter twice to continue.
29. Select which type of network the server will be attached to and press Enter.
30. Choose to install Microsoft Internet Information Server or not and press Enter.
31. If you are using the integrated Ethernet port, choose Select from list, then Enter. If you are not using the integrated Ethernet port, install your adapter as necessary and continue to step 30.
32. Insert the Ethernet Support Diskette, click on Have Disk and press Enter.
33. Switch to the A:\winnt directory and press Enter.
34. Accept AMD PCNET Family Ethernet Adapter and press Enter.
35. Select Network Protocols to install and press Enter when finished. If you chose to install Microsoft Internet Information Server, TCP/IP Protocol is selected by default.
36. Select Network Services to install and press Enter twice when finished.

NOTE: At the AMD PCNET PCI Ethernet Adapter v3.11 screen, select Continue. Failure to do so may result in the improper function of the integrated Ethernet port.

37. You will now need to configure any Network Protocols specified earlier in setup. Information required for each protocol varies by your specific network configuration.
38. Next, deselect any network bindings you do not wish to install and press Enter twice to start the network and continue installation.

NOTE: The user will have to know the user name and password to be able to connect to the proper domain.

39. Enter the name of the domain to which this server will connect and press Enter.
40. Press Enter again to Finish setup.
41. Select a proper Date and Time for the server as well as the appropriate Time Zone and press Enter (Close).
42. Setup will prompt you to choose a display mode. Click OK, then Cancel from the Display Settings screen to ignore this step for now. Refer to Appendix C to install the S3 TRIO 64V+ Driver.
43. Insert the floppy labeled Emergency Repair Diskette into the floppy drive when prompted and press Enter to create an Emergency Repair Diskette.
44. Remove diskette and CD-ROM and press Enter to restart the server. Installation is now complete.
45. Install Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3. See Appendix B for further details.

Appendix A
Quick Install for Experienced Users:
1. Install the desired number of hot-swap hard drives into the hot-swap bays beginning at the top and proceeding downward.
2. Configure arrays on the hard drives using PC ServeRAID Configuration Diskette Version 2.23A.
3. If any ISA devices are installed (or will be installed) that need IRQs (or other system resources reserved), go into the BIOS settings and choose Plug and Play and then the desired resource type you wish to reserve. Change the desired resource from Plug and Play to ISA Legacy.
4. Insert the Windows NT Server 4.0 CD into the drive and reboot the server.
5. Enable BIOS Support for Bootable CD-ROM in the ServeRAID Mini-Utility (reached by pressing Ctrl+I during Boot).
- Select Advanced Functions.
- Select Boot CD-ROM and INT13 Extensions.
- Set BIOS Support for Bootable CD-ROM to Yes
- Select Exit three times.
6. Press <F6> when the message Setup is inspecting your computer's hardware configuration appears. Install the IBM PC ServeRAID driver off of the IBM PC ServeRAID Drivers and Utilities Diskette.
7. Use the Ethernet drivers from the Ethernet Support Diskette for the on-board Ethernet 100/10 controller.
The path to the driver is A:\winnt.
8. !!! IMPORTANT !!! At the AMD PCNET PCI Ethernet Adapter v3.11 screen, just click on Continue. DO NOT make any selections in this window. Simply accept the defaults and continue.
9. Install Microsoft NT Service Pack 3.

Appendix B
Installing Service Pack 3 on Windows NT Server 4.0:

NOTE: You will need about 75 MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.

1. Download the Service Pack onto your hard drive (be sure to select the 128-bit version if you are using the US/Canadian version of Windows NT).
2. Run the file from a command prompt or from an explore screen.
3. Press Enter on the nt4sp3_i.exe Service Pack Setup screen to begin installation.
4. Agree to the license and press Enter.
5. Select to create an Uninstall directory or not and press Enter twice to continue.
6. The Service Pack is then copied to your system.
7. If the message asking if you want to replace c:\winnt\system32\SCHANNEL.DLL pops up, select Replace.
8. After the installation is complete, select OK or press Enter to reboot the server.

Appendix C
Installing S3 TRIO 64V+ Video Driver:
(an excerpt from Windows NT 4.0 Device Drivers for S3 TRIO 64V+ Diskette README.TXT)
1. Start system with Windows NT 4.0 installed.
2. IMPORTANT: When the 'Please select the operating system to start...' message is displayed, select Windows NT Workstation Version 4.00 VGA mode.
3. From Start, select the Settings group, then select the Control Panel icon.
4. In the Control Panel, double click on the Display icon.
5. In the Settings screen, select Display Type.
6. From the Display Type screen, and in the Adapter Type section, select Change.
7. In the Change Display screen, select Have Disk...
8. Insert the new display driver diskette into the A drive, then select OK.
9. From the list of displayed S3 devices, select your S3 device.
10. From Third-party Drivers, select Yes to proceed.
11. If a message appears stating the driver is already installed on the system, and asks if you want to use the current or new drivers, be sure to select New.
12. If prompted for the driver diskette a second time, select Continue.
13. When the message 'The drivers were successfully installed' is displayed, remove the display driver diskette, then select OK.
14. Back at the Display Type window, select Close.
15. Back at the Display Properties window, select Close.
16. When you see the System Settings Change window, asking if you wish to restart your computer, select Yes to reboot now.
