Aptiva - Running DOSSHELL from Windows

Applicable to: United States

You should avoid running DOSSHELL while Windows is still active. While it may not cause a problem when you select the DOS Prompt icon in Windows and then start up DOSSHELL, you may select an option that changes the characteristics of the video display, causing later problems after returning to Windows.

A more important reason for not running DOSSHELL while Windows is still active is that you may accidentally delete or alter a file that is still being used by Windows, causing Windows to exhibit strange behavior or causing Windows or an application to fail. It can also cause a loss of data in some instances.

If you do run DOSSHELL from Windows, use it only for a short period of time and avoid changing, moving, or deleting any files. Also, do not alter the number of lines on the screen, since this may later affect Windows when you return.

Also, avoid starting DOSSHELL from File Manager or with the Windows File/Run options. This may cause DOSSHELL to start up in a windowed screen, and the font and colors in this window may make the information hard to read. If you then decide to change the number of lines or change the view, it may cause the window to lock up, possibly also causing Windows to hang, the mouse cursor to be lost, or various other situations. In many cases, it can be very difficult or impossible to recover from some of these conditions, short of rebooting the system and thus losing data files if any were in use.
