Servers - Announcement Letter: Clustering solutions and PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater

Your mission-critical business applications can now be installed on IBM PC Servers using the latest high-availability clustering hardware and software available in the PC marketplace. IBM, as part of an Early Adopter's Agreement with Microsoft's clustering initiative called Wolfpack, has hardware configurations certified under the Wolfpack platform. In addition, a PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kit, PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater, and SmoothStart are being announced to facilitate installation of these configurations.
Certified Wolfpack hardware cluster configurations include:
-PC Server Enterprise Shared Disk Cluster - two PC Server 704 systems attached to single or multiple PC Server Enterprise Expansion Towers to form a software implemented RAID shared disk cluster
- PC Server Advanced Shared Disk Cluster - two PC Server 704 systems attached to single or multiple Symbios MetaStor expansion unit(**) to form a hardware implemented RAID shared disk cluster
- The PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kit contains in one carton and under one ordering part number many of the necessary components to configure PC Servers and an PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower for a shared disk solution. The PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater is a new repeater card option that now supports two repeater cards on one SCSI cus and twin tailing for high-availability cluster solutions. Rounding out these offerings is SmoothStart, the new IBM services that provide on-site installation of Wolfpack with performance and installation planning applications specifically designed for clustered configurations running under Wolfpack.

Description
The following IBM PC Server cluster configurations have been certified on the Wolfpack platform:
PC Server Enterprise Shared Disk Cluster
This two-node configuration consists of two PC Server 704 systems connected to a PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower to provide a fault tolerant cluster solution using the software implemented RAID 5 function within Wolfpack. This cost-effective configuration provides very good data storage scalability as up to four PC Server Enterprise Expansion Towers can be supported to provide up to 324GB of data storage.
Each PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower must be attached to an PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter. If more than one PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower is desired, additional PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kits or individual elements of the kit, should be ordered to support each additional configuration. The configuration below provides the basic components to support a single PC Server Enterpirise Expansion Tower using twelve 4.51GB Wide Ultra SCSI Hot-Swap Hard Disk Drives. If configurations require 9.1GB hard drives an additional PC Server HS Backplane III and Backplane-to-backplane cable will be needed as these drives are half-high and only three drives can be installed in each hot-swap, six-bay backplane. Up to nine 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI Hot-Swap Hard Disk Drives can be supported and are certified in this PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower configuration.
Improved high-availability in the PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower can be obtained through installation of a PC Server 780W Redundant Power Option(94G4701). Customers choosing this option to initially upgrade a PC Server Enterprise Tower should order individual components of the PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kit to avoid getting the 220 W PC Server Power Supply Upgrade which is not needed for PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower using the PC Server 780W Redundant Power Option.

This two-node configuration also consists of two PC Server 704 systems, but they are connected to a high-performance, differential SCSI Symbios RAID subsystem. This configuraiton provides a hardware implemented RAID 5 solution for high-end cluster solutions. The Symbios MetaStor expansion unit is available in deskside enclosures. This configuration can be expanded to support up to four Symbios MetaStor expansion unit controllers in each PC Server connected to four deskside DS-20E and DS-10E enclosures for a total of 1080GB of data storage capacity. The Symbios enclosure features high-availability functions such as hot-swap redundant fans and power supplies, and hot-swap hard drives. In addition hot-swap redundant controllers are optionally available.

PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater(94G7585) The PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater increases the number of SCSI devices that can be installed on a single SCSI channel and now has high-availability function that allows two of these repeater cards to be attached the same SCSI bus through a SCSI host adapter installed in each server node. This provides the hardware link in case of failover to the shared disk sybsystem of PC Server Enterprise Shared Disk Cluster solution.
PC Server Ethernet Cluster Monitoring Cable(#######)
The PC Server Ethernet Cluster Monitoring Cable is a 25-foot cable that connects to each of the IBM 100/10 PCI Ethernet Adapters to provide a heart-beat monitoring capability between the two-node servers of the cluster configuration. Through this monitoring, Wolfpack provides a failover to the second node, if the first node experiences failure.
Cluster node status and monitoring is performed over both the production LAN and over the Ethernet to Ethernet through the PC Server Ethernet Cluster Monitoring Cable. Without using multiple cables or hub resources, this point to point cable allows reliable linkage between the two PC Server nodes in the cluster.

Software Requirements: No unique software is required for either PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater or PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kit. Wolfpack is required to support the configurations using these options listed in this announcement.
Compatibility When installed in the PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower and PC Server 3519 Rack Storage Expansion Enclosure, the PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater is compatible with all options supported by these enclosures. Limitations
The PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater limitations include:
- This adapter supports SCSI-2 Fast/Wide mode. Ultra SCSI mode is not supported.
- A maximum of 12 Fast/Wide SCSI-2 hot-swap disk drives are supported on a single SCSI channel when attached to a PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter or PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter. A maximum of seven SCSI devices are supported on a single channel when attached to all other supported SCSI adapters.
- Daisy-chaining of backplanes within a PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower is supported when attached to either the PC ServeRAID SCSI Adapter or PC Server Ultra Wide SCSI PCI Adapter configured as follows:
- Up to two backplanes when using slim-high, hot-swap hard disk drives
- Up to three backplanes when using slim-high, hot-swap hard disk drives
Daisy-chaining is supported on other SCSI adapters in the following configuration:
- Up to two backplanes when using half-high, hot-swap hard disk drives

The PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower connects to one or more external SCSI-2 Fast/Wide connectors on the host system through an external cable that goes to the back of the enclosure. An internal cable brings the signal from the back of the enclosure to the backplane or media bays. When a PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater is installed in the PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower, the external cable will instead attach to the external connector of the PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater and the internal cable will attach to the internal connector on the PC Server SCSI-2 F/W Enhanced Repeater. Any additional cabling configurations to support internal expansion of the PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower remain unchanged from the PC Server Enterprise Expansion Tower announcement.
Approximate Installation Time: The PC Server Shared Disk Convenience Kit requires approximately one hour t install.
The PC Server SCSI-2 F/w Enhanced Repeater takes approximately 15 minutes to insatll.
