Aptiva - Maintenance of Stacker Compressed Drives

Applicable to: United States

As with other computer systems, a regular schedule of disk drive maintenance should be adopted to help ensure the integrity and readiness of the system. Typical tasks are checking the drives for logic errors, backing up new and changed files periodically, and running an anti-virus program, such as IBM AntiVirus, on the drive to prevent loss or damage to the data files on the system.

The presence of a Stacker compressed drive on the system will not affect any backup or anti-virus program. Operations of these programs will be the same as if the drive was uncompressed. The maintenance functions for the drive, however, are slightly different than the maintenance functions for uncompressed drives and they are reviewed here to help you understand what to do.

Stacker drive monitoring utilities can be started in Windows by selecting the Stacker group and then selecting the Stacker Toolbox icon. The functions and selections available in Windows provide a current view of your drives and allows you to modify the various settings (using the Settings option in the top menu bar), as well as running some of the utilities (using the Tools option in the top menu bar). Refer to the Help option in the top menu bar for details.

The Stacker functions available in DOS are more comprehensive than those in Windows, since many of these functions must be performed outside of the Windows environment. To start up the Stacker utilities from DOS, be sure you have completely exited from Windows and then enter the command: STAC at the DOS prompt. This will provide you with a menu of functions that include: compressing and uncompressing drives, checking drives, optimizing or defragmenting drives, tuning the compression for space or performance, changing drive size, and setting up passwords for the drives. Selecting any of the functions will provide you with a short description of that function in the window to the right of the menu. Press F1 when viewing the menu to get more information about the functions. You can also consult the Stacker sections of the PC-DOS 7.0 User's Guide for additional information

A general suggestion for how often to run the Stacker utilities for analysis and disk tuneup is once a week for the first few weeks, and then once every two weeks thereafter. If possible, try not to delay the running of the Stacker tools for more than a month since the last time the program was run. In most cases, it is only necessary to verify that the file structure on the drive is correct and that there is no significant fragmentation. This will help to ensure that your data files are safe and that the compressed drive is functioning properly.
