TP 701 - Fuel Gauge questions on new batteries
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
A new ThinkPad 701 optional or replacement battery being charged for the first time will register ZERO during the initial charge (which may take from 8-24 hours. then go to 100% all at once.
Configuration:
All new or Replacement ThinkPad 701 batteries
(This does not effect batteries which ship with the ThinkPads as they have already been fully charged as part of the manufacturing process.)
Solution:
Brand new batteries have no idea what their current capacity is. Rather than take an incorrect guess, the developer of the battery decided to monitor temp and battery voltage until a known reference point is reached - this reference is 100%. After reaching this point the gauging microcode kicks in and you have a fully functional fuel gauge.
