Aptiva - Running DOS applications in Windows 95

Windows 95 runs DOS tasks in a window, with background execution enabled. These defaults will probably work for whatever program you run in DOS. However, they may not work for games and other demanding applications. Fortunately, these settings are easy to change.
First, bring up the MS-DOS Prompt by doing the following:
1.) Click on Start from the taskbar.
2.) Go up to the Programs option.
3.) Click on MS-DOS Prompt and the following window will appear.
4.) A right-click on the Command window or its icon on the taskbar brings up the Options menu.
5.) Select Properties. You'll see the items that you once needed PIF Edit to change (such as the working directory and command line). Under the Program tab, you will find options for running the task in DOS mode (listed under Advanced). When you run an application this way, Windows will close all your open programs and restart in a special mode for running only that one application. Under the Screen tab, you'll see the options for full-screen, windowed, and initial size. Under the Misc tab, you'll find the controls for foreground and background applications.
6.) Make the necessary changes, then click on OK or Apply as required (you may need to reboot the system for your changes to take effect).
7.) Run your DOS based program.
NOTE: If a program won't run properly with the default settings, even in full-screen mode, try changing Foreground to Exclusive mode. You'll still be able to use the Alt+Tab combination to switch among your Windows applications. If the DOS application messes up your Windows applications when it's in the background (sound leakage from games is common), then you need to check the Always suspend box.
