Security and auditability features of these servers are:

o The System Configuration Utility (SCU) is used to set the following security functions to provide controls of who has access to the server setup program and data on the server:

- Enablement of the keyboard lockout timer so that the server requires a password to activate the keyboard and mouse after a specified time-out period - 1 to 128 minutes
- A set-secure mode to prevent keyboard or mouse input and to prevent use of the power on or reset controls
- Ability to set and enable power-on/reset and administrative password functions
- Ability to disable writing to the diskette drive when secure mode is set

o Mechanical security features include:

o A mechanical lock on the front, right side cover limiting access to 12 hot-swap drive bays, five removable device bays, and power-on and reset buttons (tower models)

o Cover-intrusion switches on top and front covers providing cover-intrusion alarm warnings (tower models)

o An Netfinity Security Cover III option available for preventing unauthorized access to the external cabling, adapter connectors, and ports on the back panel (tower models)

Small Computer System Interface (SCSI), as defined in the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) standard X3.131-1986, provides a port for the attachment of external devices. The SCSI bus may be internal or external to the system unit. The Netfinity 7000 models with a IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter installed is in conformance with this standard and has an two external ports.

Netfinity 7000s with this adapter also conform with ANSI SCSI-2 and work with SCSI-2 Fast or Fast/Wide devices. It is a customer responsibility to ensure that the server is secure to prevent sensitive data from being removed via the external SCSI ports.

Your IBM marketing representative can also be contacted for a complete listing of these network operating systems. The Sales Manual will be updated by product general availability with a complete list of supported software and certifications where appropriate.

COMPATIBILITY:

The Netfinity 7000 systems contain licensed system programs that include set configuration, set features, and test programs. Some of these system programs are stored in the system ROM, while others are contained on diskette. System BIOS is loaded from a "flash" EEPROM on the system board into system memory. This BIOS provides the hardware instructions and interfaces designed to support the standard features of the Netfinity 7000 and to maintain compatibility with many software programs currently operating under OS/2 and Windows NT on IBM Netfinity servers; however, due to the higher speed of the processors in these models, some timing-sensitive software may require modification.

Refer to the 8651 Sales Manual pages or contact your IBM representative for a complete list of supported features, options, and compatible IBM and vendor software. The Sales Manual will be updated with a compatibility list by product availability. Also, the sales manual is periodically updated as new, supported features are introduced.

LIMITATIONS:

Netfinity 7000:

o Netfinity 7000 supports 64MB, 128MB, and 256MB memory DIMM options listed in this announcement. The memory expansion card on Netfinity 7000 systems has four memory banks, each with four DIMM sockets. Memory DIMMs must be installed in matched sets of four due to four-way memory interleaving. The memory DIMM option kits listed in this announcement contain four DIMMs per kit to simplify memory installation. Installing various combinations of these memory kits on the same memory card is supported.

o The four open 5.25-inch, half-high device bays are designed for media access devices such as tape backup, CD-ROM, or optical drives. It is not recommended that hard disk drives be installed in these bays due to electromagnetic interference (EMI) generated by these devices and the electrostatic discharge (ESD) susceptibility that could damage the hard disk drives.

o Because these systems are designed as industry standard servers using an industry standard floppy diskette drive interface, the location of the media eject button on the industry standard diskette drive and the lack of support for a electronic eject 2.88MB diskette drive option may be a limitation for customers with certain disabilities.

o Microprocessor SMP installations must be of the same processor type, cache, and clock speed. Mixing microprocessors of different types and speeds is not supported.

Refer to the SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS section for operating systems limitations.

CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Netfinity 7000 is designated as customer setup. Customer setup instructions are shipped with the system.

CONFIGURATION INFORMATION:

NETFINITY 7000 MODELS

The Netfinity 7000 systems are cabled internally with a 16-bit cable running from each of the two 7880 Wide Ultra SCSI PCI controllers to each of the two hot-swap backplanes. Each backplane supports either six slim-line or three half-high, hot-swap hard drives. The Netfinity 4.51GB and Netfinity 9.1GB Wide Ultra SCSI SCA-2 Hard Disk Drive options are supported in these backplanes. Due to the half-high form factor of the 9.1GB drive, only three drives of these drives can be installed in each backplane. An IDE cable connects the standard IDE CD-ROM to the IDE controller.

A four-drop, 16-bit SCSI cable is included with all Netfinity 7000 models to support installation of SCSI devices into the four 5.25-inch drive bays. This cable allows the following configuration alternatives:

o If only one of the hot-swap backplanes is going to be used, the four-drop cable can be attached to the 7880 Wide Ultra SCSI controller that is not attached to a backplane.

o If both hot-swap backplanes are required, a supported PCI or ISA SCSI adapter must be installed and the four-drop cable attached to it.

NETFINITY 7000 MODELS WITH IBM SERVERAID II ULTRA SCSI ADAPTER INSTALLED

Netfinity 7000 models with an optional IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter installed requires the two 16-bit cables attached to the SCSI controllers to be disconnected and installed on the two internal SCSI connectors of the RAID adapter. Customers wanting to add SCSI devices to the three 5.25-inch drive bays should connect the standard four-drop SCSI cable to one of the 7880 Wide Ultra SCSI controllers to support installation of SCSI devices in these bays. Installation of narrow, or 8-bit, SCSI devices requires a SCSI Converter (68-to 50-pin) to be connected between the device and the cable drop connector.

EXTERNAL CABLING

Netfinity 7000 models can support external attachment of SCSI devices from one of the integrated 7880 controllers through the use of the Netfinity PCI SCSI Controller to Bulkhead Cable (94G7421); however, this will require disconnecting a backplane from a SCSI controller. Other alternatives for external device connections are by attachment of a supported external cable directly to the external port of a supported SCSI adapter. The PC Server F/W to Fast External Cable (70G9858) or PC Server F/W to F/W External Cable (70G9857) may be used depending upon the external SCSI device application.

Netfinity 7000 models with an optional IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter installed can support attachment of external devices through the use of the Netfinity PCI SCSI Controller to Bulkhead Cable (94G7421) attached to one of the unused 7880 SCSI controllers. In addition, the IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter also supports attachment of external RAID devices directly from its external port through the use of several .8mm cables of varying lengths. These cables include:

o IBM 1M External .8mm SCSI Cable - (76H3589)
o IBM 2M External .8mm SCSI Cable - (01K8027)
o IBM 3M External .8mm SCSI Cable - (01K8028)
o IBM 4.3M External .8mm SCSI Cable - (01K8029)

IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter can also support three external channels in the Netfinity 7000 through the use of an IBM Third Channel Cable (76H5400) which provides a third external connector to the two standard external connectors of the IBM ServeRAID II Ultra SCSI Adapter.

CABLE ORDERS:

There are no cabling requirements, other than for system power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor connections. Cables are provided with the system unit and IBM monitors and the instructions are provided as part of initial setup.

Appropriate cabling is necessary to attach the server to the LAN. The cabling is dependent upon the network interface card (NIC) and LAN requirements chosen. Cabling selection, installation, and physical connection is a customer responsibility.

INSTALLABILITY: The Netfinity 7000 models require at least 30 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install an operating system and other adapters or features.

USEABILITY CHARACTERISTICS

By following the setup instructions, the user attaches the keyboard and monitor. The power cord for the display and system unit is then plugged into an electrical outlet. Power is then turned on the monitor, then the system unit. When the system unit is powered on, it performs a power-on self-test (POST) that takes approximately 60 seconds. After POST has completed successfully, installation of software may then be accomplished.

AP, LA, CAN, EMEA CONSIDERATIONS

Limited NLS support is provided with the Netfinity 7000 systems. Safety and operational warnings in the System Library are translated into all major languages. NLS support beyond this is not currently available.
