Servers - LAN Server 4.0 Disk Mirroring Requirements

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
LAN Server 4.0 disk mirroring requires disks that have the same geometry.

Problem Isolation Aids:
Refer to Page 54 of the Network Administrator Reference Volume 1: Planning, Installation and Configuration manual, which reads:

Disk Requirements for Fault Tolerance:
If you plan to install Fault Tolerance on your server workstation and want to use drive mirroring or drive duplexing, you must have a minimum of two physical disks on the workstation.

The following additional constraints must be addressed:
1. here must be enough contiguous free space for FTSETUP to create the secondary, or back-up drive.
2. You can only mirror into an extended partition.
3. Recovery is a special case of mirroring, so you can't recover into a primary partition.
4. Therefore, if you want a recoverable operating system, you must install it into an extended partition by using Boot Manager.

Note:
The disks used for mirroring must have the same geometry. Disks with the same geometry have the same number of sectors per track and the same number of tracks per cylinder.

Fix:
None.
