Aptiva - Introduction Of The Aptiva S3C and S35

Applicable to: United States

Get ready for the power of the S Series
If you crave sights, sounds and speeds that will blow your mind, thereÆs no better place to see the future of multimedia than on the multimedia PC, Aptiva. Aptiva has always been a strong multimedia machine with outstanding effects and more than enough energy to spare. Now, get ready for the ultimate multimedia powerhouses the latest S Series models packed with the hottest new multimedia technology straight from the guys in the IBM lab.

A faster engine
When youÆre running a souped-up multimedia machine like Aptiva, youÆre going to need a powerful engine to make it fly. Enter IntelÆs 233MHz (Megahertz) Pentium processors with MMX technology, one of the fastest Pentium processors available today. (MHz measures processor internal clock speed only, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance.) These spectacular MMX technology-enhanced chips were designed to speed up processing of audio, video and 3D graphics, in effect, turning up the multimedia excitement to full blast. MMX technology offers the potential for smoother, more realistic video; higher quality graphics and enhanced audio.

Multimedia to remember
With these new models, Aptiva provides the very latest innovations from memory developers SGRAM (synchronous graphic random access memory) and SDRAM (synchronous dynamic random access memory) technology, designed to enhance AptivaÆs already outstanding video and processor capabilities. AptivaÆs 2MB (Megabytes) of SGRAM improves on VRAM (20% performance improvement) to deliver the super performance needed to fully showcase todayÆs advanced 3D graphics. The 32MB of SDRAM in the S3C and 48MB of SDRAM on the S35 improve on EDO RAM (up to 20% performance improvement) to work better with the increasing speeds of todayÆs high-performance processors.

More Storage Than Ever
These new models provide not just enough room to move with hard drives up to
6.4GB GB = billion bytes, when referring to hard drive capacity (gigabytes), the new Aptivas give you room to soar. The skyÆs the limit, and these models are strapped in and ready for takeoff.

The New S Series Aptivas are souped up and ready to fly. Check out whatÆs in store:

What makes Aptiva fast?
AptivaÆs new 56Kbps modem for blazing Internet access
With AptivaÆs new 56Kbps modems (upgradable from 33.6 kbps), you can access the Internet nearly twice as fast as you could before. With LucentÆs new 56Kbps technology (K56flex), Aptiva owners can experience downstream speeds of up to 56Kbps from Internet service providers (ISPs) to their Aptiva. K56flex significantly speeds the delivery of information from the Internet, so graphics-intensive Web pages, audio and video, and regular files will download at almost twice the rate of the popular 28.8Kbps standard.

When it comes to 56Kbps connections, there are two protocols: K56flex, developed by modem manufacturers Lucent and Rockwell and X2, developed by U.S. Robotics. These protocols are not yet compatible for connecting to each other at speeds of up to 56Kbps (this limitation only refers to 56Kbps connections to ISPs). Modems, regardless of maker or protocol, can still connect to each other and to ISPs at speeds of up to 33.6Kbps.

This means consumers will not always be able to achieve a 56Kbps connection when dialing in to the Internet through their ISPs. To connect at 56Kbps, the service provider must be using the same protocol in their central site modems. Because of the rapidly changing marketplace, users should contact any service provider directly to find out what specifically they are supporting at any given time As of 4/8/97, Livingston Enterprises, Inc.(an integrated access server manufacturer), and Lucent Technologies have announced that nearly 300 additional Internet Service Providers (ISPs) will offer the K56flex 56 kbits/s modem protocol to their customers, with more signing up every day. The addition of these companies brings the total number of ISPs offering K56flex to more than 600. To access a listing of many of the companies that will use K56flex with Lucent products, see the K56flex home page at http://www.lucent.com/micro/K56flex/cust.html.

What powers AptivaÆs multimedia?
24X Max (variable speed) CD-ROM
AptivaÆs new CD-ROM drive technology (CAV- constant angular velocity) brings consumers the fastest transfer rates and access times available in the CD-ROM industry* from their multimedia CD-ROM software. (*according to MPC3, Wizard and WinBench 97 benchmarks)

For Aptiva owners, a faster transfer rate means you can download data faster from a CD-ROM disc to your hard drive. Faster access time means you can find data faster on media youÆre running on the CD-ROM drive. 24X Max (variable speed) means smoother operation while youÆre using Aptiva.

Where does 24X Max (variable speed) deliver the improvements?

Faster access time and faster transfer rate

Shorter wait to get the information you request, esp. in software incorporating full-motion video capability, text and pictures. Also big improvements in speed of extensive information searches and retrievals (i.e. encyclopedias).

Noise reduction

Partial CAV drive has less vibration because high transfer rates can be achieved with relatively low rpm. The lower the rpm, the lower the vibration and audible noise.

Reliability

Less wear on the spindle means partial-CAV drive remains in good condition for a long time.

Subwoofer (selected models)
Selected Aptiva models are bundled with a subwoofer. Designed to match and complement the Aptiva S Series multimedia color monitor, the subwoofer provides high-quality, low-frequency bass sound. Powered from the PC no power bricks or AC power cords required the subwoofer is turned off when the PC is powered down. Aptiva S Series owners will appreciate the smart cabinet styling with cloth grille.

What makes Aptiva easy to use?
AptivaÆs Remote Control a shortcut to the Web!
So youÆre ready to surf the Web. You sit down, power on your PC, you wait, you click on an icon, you wait, you open a service provider application, you wait, you sign on, start the browser program and wait. And wait. And wait. Sound inconvenient? Let AptivaÆs new infrared remote control take you to the web in just two clicks!

Once youÆve configured your ISP (Internet service provider) and Web browser, just press the remoteÆs Web button, and your chosen Internet service provider (i.e., America Online, The Microsoft Network) pops up automatically. Then press the Enter key on your remote to launch your modem connection, bringing up a deafult Web browser (i.e., Netscape, Microsoft Internet Explorer). ThatÆs it! Two clicks and youÆre connected to the Web!

ThatÆs not all: AptivaÆs remote makes your computing even more comfortable by freeing you from that locked position in front of your keyboard, mouse and monitor. Now, at the touch of a finger, you can answer the phone on your Aptiva, play messages, start a phone call, play an audio CD, even surf the Web.

Browsing from your easy chair
After you connect to the Web, AptivaÆs remote makes surfing a breeze by providing directional keys that help you navigate. Move forward, back, up, down, and in and around pages easily (or find special sites with the History and Favorites keys), all from your easy chair. In fact, you can have as many as 20 feet between the remote and its emitter, as long as they are in clear view of each other.

Cordless Mouse
Looking for a mouse with no tail? Enjoy comfortable computing with AptivaÆs radio-frequency mouse (S Series only) that lets you point, click and navigate with more freedom to move around.
