IBM PC - Recovery of preloaded software

Applicable to: World-Wide

Requirements
To use the CD to restore a hard disk, you must have one of the following:

- IBM SCSI CD-ROM drive with an Adaptec 2940 PCI SCSI adapter.
- IBM internal IDE CD-ROM drive. (most major manufacturer IDE CD-ROMs will work)
- IBM-supplied, external, parallel-port CD-ROM drive.
For more information about the IBM-supplied CD-ROM drive, see "Installing an IBM-Supplied CD-ROM Drive" later in this document.

- Diskette drive A of the computer as the startup drive.
- Product Recovery CD-ROM (included in this package).
- Product Recovery Diskette. If the diskette is not included in your package, you can create it using the BUILDDSK program included on the CD. You will need a blank, 1.44 MB diskette.
For more information, see "Building the Recovery Diskette" later this document.

Installing an IBM-Supplied CD-ROM Drive
If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, you might have received an external, parallel-port CD-ROM drive from IBM to use with the Recovery CD-ROM. These IBM-supplied drives include the following:

- External, parallel-port CD-ROM drive
- Parallel cable
- Power adapter

Install the drive according to the following instructions; then follow the recovery process. When you have finished the recovery process, return the drive to IBM. Instructions for returning the drive are included with the drive.

To install the external, parallel-port CD-ROM drive:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Connect the parallel cable to the external parallel port on the computer and to the connector labeled PARALLEL IN on the CD-ROM drive.
3. Connect the power adapter to the CD-ROM drive; then plug it into an electrical outlet.

Recovering Your Preinstalled Software
ATTENTION: All data on the hard disk will be deleted. Be sure that you have backed up all of your data before running this program. After you have restored the hard disk, you must reinstall any application programs that were not originally preinstalled on your computer.
If the recovery process is stopped or canceled before it completes, type CLEAN at an A: prompt. Then restart the process. This will reset the Recovery diskette and enable the reinstallation to complete successfully.

1. Start the Recovery Process.
a. Make sure the PC is powered off.
b. Insert the Recovery diskette into drive A of the PC.
c. Power on the PC. The program will start automatically.

Note: Do not insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive until told to do so.
2. Select the Configuration for Your Recovery Process.
- Let the Recovery program find your internal CD-ROM Drive.
Your CD-ROM drive must be functional and recognized by your PC in order for this process to work. The Recovery program will attempt to find your CD-ROM drivers on your hard disk (for example, IBMCDROM.SYS or IBMIDECD.SYS). Selecting this option will not activate drivers associated with parallel ports or SCSI chains.

If the Recovery program cannot detect your CD-ROM drive, press any key to continue and select your CD-ROM drive from the list.
- Select your CD-ROM drive from the CD-ROM Drive List.
From this menu you can select to reinstall the software from several different types of CD-ROM drives, including SCSI, IDE, and parallel port.

3. Partition and Format the Drive.
Before you can restore the preinstalled software, the hard disk partition that contains the preinstalled software must be formatted. You also can choose to reformat your entire hard disk. You can format your hard disk as one partition (drive C) or multiple partitions (drive C, drive D, and so on).

ATTENTION: All data in the reformatted partitions on the hard disk will be deleted. Be sure that you have backed up all of your data before running this program. After you have restored the hard disk, you will need to reinstall any application programs that were not originally preinstalled on your computer.

Select the appropriate choice.
- Define multiple partitions, format, and recover the preinstalled software.
This selection will repartition and format your entire hard disk. Every file on the hard disk will be deleted, and the preinstalled software will be reinstalled on drive C. If you select this choice, another screen will appear for you to select the partition sizes.

The Recovery program will display the size of your current hard disk as XXX MB. To properly install your preinstalled software, you must specify a minimum of 350 MB for drive C.

You can specify any amount, up to the remaining capacity, for the other partitions. Any unspecified capacity will be used for the final partition. If you press Enter without specifying an amount, the entire disk will be formatted as C.

- Format drive C only and recover the preinstalled software.
This selection will format drive C and reinstall the preinstalled software. If your PC has multiple partitions, only the data on drive C will be deleted.

4. Recover the Preinstalled Software.
Once your selection is made, the Recovery program will begin to initialize. When the system returns to the A: prompt:
a. Leave the Recovery diskette in drive A.
b. Insert the Recovery CD in the CD-ROM drive.
1) Press the Load/Eject button on the CD-ROM drive. The tray slides out.
2) Place the CD in the tray with the label facing up.
3) Close the tray by pressing the Load/Eject button.

c. Restart the computer by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del.
When the computer restarts, a license agreement displays on your screen.

d. When prompted, press Y to accept the license agreement or N to go to a DOS prompt.
If you press N, the recovery process will not continue. If you press Y, you will be prompted to continue the formatting.

e. Press C to continue with formatting or N to cancel the formatting and go to a DOS prompt.
The recovery of the preinstalled software will be completed automatically. A message will be displayed when the recovery process is completed.
If you used an internal CD-ROM drive, your recovery process is complete. If you used the IBM-supplied, external CD-ROM drive, continue with step 5 of this procedure.

5. Disconnect the External CD-ROM drive.
When the recovery process has completed, you must disconnect the external CD-ROM drive and return it to IBM. To disconnect the external CD-ROM drive:
a. Turn off the computer.
b. Unplug the power adapter.
c. Disconnect the external CD-ROM drive from the parallel port of the computer.
Follow the directions supplied with the drive to return it to IBM.

Building the Recovery Diskette
For your convenience, a copy of the Recovery diskette has been placed on your Recovery CD-ROM. If you misplace or damage the diskette, or if you did not receive a diskette with this package, follow these steps to create a Recovery diskette.

Note: To create the Recovery diskette, you must use a computer with a working CD-ROM drive and a working diskette drive.
1. Insert the Recovery CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Change to the LOADSOFT directory on the CD-ROM drive.
3. Type BUILDDSK and press Enter.
4. Insert a blank 1.44MB diskette into the diskette drive, and press Y to continue.

License Agreement
The Recovery utility will restore the software provided with the system onto the hard disk. You shall use this utility and this CD for the sole purpose of restoring this software onto the hard disk of an IBM computer that originally shipped with Microsoft Windows 95, preinstalled. Any other use is expressly prohibited. Once restored, use of this software, including the use of Microsoft Windows 95, is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable licenses that were provided with the system, including the Microsoft end user license agreement.
