IBM PS/2 (Type 9577) - 2GB SCSI-2 fast hard drive hangs machine when connected

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom
When you have seated the 2GB Fast hard drive in the tray of the 77i with the four screws and then power up the system, the hard drive just clicks and the machine fails to complete POST.

Problem Isolation Aids
Unscrew the HDD and rest on top of the machine. Make sure the HDD is still connected to the SCSI bus and the power supply, reboot the machine to see if the problem still exists. If it does you probably have a faulty drive. If not see the fix below.

Fix
The problem is that some of the screws shipped with the 2GB SCSI-2 Fast (not WIDE) HDD are about 2 to 3 threads too long and when screwed into the HDD they tend to short it out. Either use the other pack of screws that may be shipped with some of the drives or just screw in some of the shorter screws, or don't screw the longer screws in all the way
