Aptiva - Rapid Resume and Energy Star monitors

Applicable to: United States

Problem occurs with Windows 95 and Energy Star compliant monitors with all features of Energy Saving modes
turned on and Rapid Resume enabled.

Conditions:

1) Energy compliant monitors and Aptiva Mxx/Axx systems
2) APM/RapidResume all enabled.
3) AutoPower off enabled (for any time period)
4) Display properties: Monitor is Energy Start compliant checked, Low Power Standby checked, set to
LESS than AutoPower off time period.
5) Wait for monitor to go to Standby, then wait for System to power off.
6) Turn system unit on, Rapid Resume brings it up to blank screen. If you press CTRL-ALT-DEL, it will
bring up the 'Close Program' box stating that Explorer is not responding...Press cancel and system states
t hat Explorer is not responding...Press cancel and system is fine.

The FIX:

1) Click on START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>DESKTOP
2) Select "Screen Saver"
3) The Energy Star compliant check MUST BE REMOVED...
4) AND, the Low Power Standby check MUST BE REMOVED...
5) AND, the Shut Off Monitor check MUST BE REMOVED...

If any of these checks remain, the monitor will power down and the problem will continue. When the system powers off, the monitor will then go to standby automatically. You can just use a screen saver for the time until the system shuts down.
