TP General - Network connection dropped on ThinkPads with Windows NT 4.0

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
When logged on to a ThinkPad 770 with Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pak 3) from another machine on the network and trying to copy files remotely from one folder to another on the 770, the copy will abort and the 770 will drop all network connections. The 770 can no longer see anything on the network and nothing on the network can see the 770. This occurs no matter what network protocols are used. Copying the same files from the 770 to the attached machine does not cause the problem nor does copying them when logged on locally to the 770.

CONFIGURATION:
The ThinkPad 770 mentioned aboved can be replaced by any of the following machines:
ThinkPad 380XD, 385XD, 560X, 600, 770E, 770ED running Windows NT with or without Service Packs installed.

SOLUTION:
Download the file, uttpfide and follow the instructions to install the piixide driver. Use this driver instead of the native Windows NT ATAPI driver. Not only does this fix the problem, but it will greatly improve efficiency.
