TP 760 - Installing PCMCIA Token Ring under OS/2

Applicable to: World-Wide

The following is a basic guideline from the ThinkPad perspective of installation and available resources.
1) Follow instructions for Installing Warp
DO NOT INSTALL NETWORK SUPPORT
DO NOT INSTALL OS/2'S PCMCIA SUPPORT

2) Install PC Card Director for OS/2. DO NOT CONFIGURE THE TOKEN RING CARD IN AUTOCONFIGURATOR
CD - Rom and other drive letter considerations:
PC Card director installation by default adds drive letters for Flash and SRAM storage device support with no GUI means of disabling.
This may change your CD ROM drive letter.
On a Warp Connect preloaded image the necessary drives are already REMmed.
At minimum - REM out
BASEDEV=PCM2ATA.ADD /S:2 /]DM /NOBEEP :Storage Driver for OS/2 (ATA)
Can also REM out
BASEDEV=OS2PCARD.DMD : Storage Driver for OS/2
DEVICE=x:\THINKPAD\PCMSSDIF.SYS :Storage Driver for OS/2 (Interface)
DEVICE=x:\THINKPAD\PCM2SRAM.SYS :Storage Driver for OS/2 (SRAM)
DEVICE=x:\THINKPAD\FLSH2MTD.SYS :Storage Driver for OS/2 (FLASH MTD)
DEVICE=x:\THINKPAD\PCM2FLSH.SYS :Storage Driver for OS/2 (FLASH)

3) Run Archive utility
After system is configured successfully - good time to run OS/2 Archive utility one time. If you encounter software configuration problems you may be able to recover with the Archive Utility. Turn on for one boot then turn off utility.
- right click on desktop
- select - Settings
- Archive
- Create archive at each system restart
- Boot
- Go back in and remove check from:
Create archive at each system restart to turn off Archive utility. If you need to restore the system software back to a saved archive, press Alt + F1 when you see a small white rectangle in the upper left corner of the screen.

4) Consider Resources of all other devices used. See Appendix A of your Users guide for full list of ThinkPad resources
Take into account ANY other device installed (ie in Docking Station, PCMCIA, etc...). If installing on a Dock I or Dock II, the default SCSI IRQ is 11. The default IRQ for the PCI bus on the 760EL/ED/ELD/ 760X/XD is also 11.
Even though you may change the IRQ on the Docking station, it is recommended to change the PCI bus IRQ on the ThinkPad.
To change the PCI IRQ go to ThinkPad Features / Docking Station / Advanced / click on PCI Device Setup. Machines with MWAVE can use 3 additional IRQs:
The defaults are DSP=10, MWAVE modem = 3, Soundblaster = 5
Only the 760CD enhanced video features use IRQ 9. Only the 760CD uses IRQ 15 for internal Ultra bay IDE devices such as the CD Rom or hard drive. 760EL/ED/ELD/ 760X/XD units do NOT use an additional IRQ for internal ultra bay devices, but DO use an additonal IRQ when installing a CD-Rom or Hard drive in Docking Stations. Be sure 'Enable secondary IDE device' is selected in ThinkPad Features / Docking Station if secondary IDE device is anywhere in the system.

5). Configure ESS Audio I/O to 240 ( if Audio desired )
*** CHANGING THINKPAD FEATURES **SHOULD** UPDATE CONFIG.SYS ***
Confirm changes in Config.sys if having problems with resources changed in ThinkPad features

a) ThinkPad Features
Enable Audio
Select Advanced button
MUST set I/O Address to 240
IRQ defaults to 5
DMA defaults to 1

b) CONFIG.SYS
Be sure the line DEVICE= MMOS2\ES1688DD.SYS
parameters match what is set in ThinkPad features.
/B: = I/O should be 240
/D: = DMA
/I: = Interrupt
/N: = ES16881$

6) For Machines with MWAVE
- Adjust COM.SYS
At the end of the line \OS2\BOOT\COM.SYS add (2,2F8,3)
The (2,2f8,3) is necessary to allow OS/2's COM driver to pick up the DSP modem,
which is normally at COM2. If the DSP modem is set to COM1, then use
(1,3F8,4).
- Move the following line to the end of Config.sys or MWAVE may fail.
RUN C:\MWAVEOS2\BIN\MWSTART.EXE

7. Install Network Support
Install software you are using for network support,
The following is for installing Warp Connect but may be used for any platform.
- Go to OS/2 System
- OS/2 Warp Connect Install/Remove
- Warp Connect Selective Install for Networking
- Choose Advanced Installation
- Pick Protocol
- Configure the IBM PCMCIA Token Ring Adapter
System Interrupt Level = 9
PCMCIA mode = YES
* Shared RAM address = D800
Default Ring Speed = 16 (if applicable)
Shared RAM Size = 16
* Memory Mapped IO/ROM address = D000
* These memory addresses SHOULD be used on PCI based machines. Other addresses can be used but these have proven best
