TP 380XD,385XD - Product Announcement

Applicable to: World-Wide

IBM proudly announces the next generation of its highly-reliable, industry-renowned, all-in-one notebook computer. The ThinkPad 380XD continues the tradition of providing leading-edge technology at affordable prices, bringing technological advances to the mainstream notebook computer user.

The ThinkPad 380XD features an Intel(R) 266 MHz(1) or 233 MHz Pentium(R) processor, both with MMX(TM) technology, and 512 KB of pipeline burst Level 2 cache memory for increased processing power and performance. Standard memory for the ThinkPad 380XD is 32MB. Also featured are large 12.1-inch (measured diagonally), 800 x 600 resolution, TFT(2) or HPA(2) displays, supporting up to 16 M colors. The improved contrast and faster response time make HPA screens far superior to traditional DSTN(3) screens -- an excellent choice for those wanting high-quality displays at an economical price. The ThinkPad 380XD also provides stereo sound with its new three-speaker configuration.

The compact, all-in-one design enables the integration of a 1.44 MB diskette drive (FDD), a 24X-10X variable speed CD-ROM(3), and a 3.2 GB(4), 4.0 GB, or 5.1 GB hard disk drive (HDD) within the system unit. To add even more flexibility and ease-of-use capabilities, the ThinkPad 380XD now includes a customer-upgradable HDD. This capability enables the customer to easily upgrade to a larger HDD when greater capacity is required. An optional 6.4 GB HDD is planned for availability in 2Q98.

For greater connectivity flexibility, the ThinkPad 380XD and the optional Enhanced Port Replicator include a universal serial bus (USB) port. The Enhanced Port Replicator provides simplified connectivity to desk-bound accessories such as external keyboard, mouse, monitor, or other peripherals including CardBus PC Cards.

All ThinkPad 380XD systems are shipped with Microsoft Windows 95 operating system software and selected applications (including MPEG 1(5) support) preinstalled. All models also include the award-winning Lotus SmartSuite (documentation at extra cost) that enables immediate productivity through its word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation applications.

For greater flexibility to satisfy customer unique requirements, the ThinkPad 380XD will be introduced into the IBM Business Partner - PC, Authorized Assembler Program (AAP).

(1) MHz only measures microprocessor internal clock speed, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance.
(2) TFT = Thin Film Transistor (technology of the display); HPA = High Performance Addressing (technology of the display); DSTN = Dual Super Twisted Nematic.
(3) Variable read rate. Actual playback speed will vary and is often less than the maximum possible.
(4) MB = one million bytes and GB = 1000 million bytes when referring to hard disk drives. Capacity available for end-users may vary.
(5) Moving Pictures Experts Group software allowing multimedia viewing capacity without additional hardware.

DESCRIPTION
KEY REASONS TO CONSIDER THE THINKPAD 380XD
The new ThinkPad 380XD models offer advanced function for customers who need the capabilities of a desktop system in a conveniently mobile and affordable notebook system. The features, functions, and prices of these systems make it a worthwhile alternative to traditional desktops. Many of the features are significantly enhanced.

o FUNCTION
- Pentium processors include models with 266 MHz or 233 MHz with L2 cache and MMX technology.
- Large, bright 12.1-inch (measured diagonally), SVGA TFT and new High-Performance Addressing (HPA) displays with 800 x 600 resolution and up to 16 M colors provide outstanding clarity and contrast.
- S.M.A.R.T. HDD sizes include 3.2 GB, 4.0 GB and a gigantic 5.1GB HDD.
- CAV CD-ROM drives access information at 24X maximum variable speed.
- HDD, FDD, and CD-ROM are all within the covers of the notebook so there is no need to swap FDD and CD-ROM drives.
- MPEG 1 (Moving Pictures Experts Group) playback enables educational and entertainment uses and other high-quality, multimedia viewing applications.
- Enhanced audio bass response.

o USABILITY
- Large 32 MB of 64-bit EDO memory can optionally be expanded up to 96MB.
- The HDD is customer-upgradeable.
- Keyboard with integrated TrackPoint III.
- Improved user interface for ThinkPad utility.
- Full mobile support with OS/2 Warp 4 or Windows NT 4.0.

KEYBOARD AND TRACKPOINT III: The keyboard has the familiar layout of a ThinkPad with a function key capability that allows you to quickly access system functions, such as power management control. The TrackPoint III is an enhanced TrackPoint (TM) II with an improved non-slip TrackPoint cap and more accurate pointing capability through improved software.

PROCESSOR: These systems have a 266 MHz or 233 MHz Pentium processor with 512 KB pipeline burst L2 cache with MMX technology for additional performance. MMX is a set of Intel processor instructions providing performance enhancements for multimedia applications.

MEMORY: The ThinkPad 380XD systems are designed to use non-parity, 64-bit EDO SO DIMM memory. Standard memory is 32 MB and can be expanded to a maximum of 96 MB with 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB or 64 MB cards. An internal slot provides for one extra memory module for users who need more memory.

PCMCIA: The Type III slot can accommodate either two Type I, two Type II, or one Type III PC card. System Soft PCMCIA software is preinstalled and provides support for the latest PCMCIA standard, 2.1. This software enables many PCMCIA cards, allowing you to simply plug in the card. The bottom PCMCIA slot also contains a ZV port.

PC CARD SUPPORT SOFTWARE: IBM ThinkPad 380XD comes with software that helps you get status and information on PCMCIA cards installed in the system, and that makes installation and use of PC Cards much easier.

The Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver enables supported PCMCIA cards by sensing them automatically. (PCMCIA cards supported by the Auto Configurator and Memory Device Driver are listed in the Sales Manual.)

STORAGE: The systems have a customer-upgradeable 3.2 GB, 4.0 GB, or 5.1 GB HDD. An optional 6.4 GB HDD upgrade will be available in 2Q98. All are S.M.A.R.T. HDDs that give an alert if a failure is pending. The 1.44 MB FDD is standard. The three-spindle design of this system allows all the drive units, including the FDD to be contained inside the ThinkPad 380XD covers.

MPEG 1: Software MPEG 1 support on Windows 95 systems provides multimedia viewing capability without hardware prerequisites like a ZV Port card. MPEG 1 decoders facilitate educational use for activities, such as movies, teleconferencing, and games.

CD-ROM: The IBM ThinkPad 380XD comes with a 24X-10X variable speed CD-ROM, which can be supported by IBM authorized service personnel.

AUDIO: The ThinkPad 380XD systems support Sound Blaster Pro applications and come with a built-in speaker and microphone. The audio is improved and the systems now have three speakers. The systems are also equipped with two jacks. One is for external stereo speakers or a headphone. The second jack is for an external microphone. A separate dial volume control is located toward the rear on the side of the keyboard.

VIDEO: The ThinkPad 380XD systems have PCI bus support with video acceleration, providing exceptional video performance.

INFRARED: The systems have an IR transceiver for wireless file and data transfer and printing. The ThinkPad 380XD models are designed to be compatible with the Infrared Data Association (IrDA) IR data link specification with speeds up to 4 Mbps.

Preinstalled software provides wireless file transfer, file synchronization, and clipboard data transfer. With the IR feature, data can be exchanged with any system, accessories, or personal digital assistants (PDAS) supporting the same specifications and data transfer speed. The IR feature may require the separate purchase of the appropriate hardware.

OTHER FEATURES: The systems have the full complement of ports -- enhanced parallel port, SVGA (external display), pointer-keyboard-keypad, and serial. The latest enhancement features a universal serial bus (USB) port. An additional connector supports the ThinkPad 380XD port replicator.

SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL
o Electronic Personalization
The Electronic Personalization feature is like a name tag on your ThinkPad. Your name, contact address or phone number can be displayed on the screen when your system is turned on. This helps in case the ThinkPad is misplaced. The personal data is stored in the system's non-volatile memory and is displayed with a password prompt.

o Passwords
- A Power-on Password Prompt (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears.
-- Each time the system is turned on
-- When the system is returned to normal operation from hibernation mode
- A Supervisor Password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The Supervisor Password protects the system functions from being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The Supervisor Password prompt appears when the hardware configuration is changed
- A hard disk drive (HDD) password (HDP) is used to protect HDD data. Once the HDP is set, data on the HDD cannot be accessed without the correct HDP. Because the HDP is stored on the HDD, the data remains protected even if the HDD is removed to another system The HDP password prompt appears:
-- Each time the system is turned on
-- When the system is returned to normal operation from suspend mode

OPTIONAL SECURITY FEATURES
o The user can attach a Kensington Lock to the keyhole on the side of the computer. This allows the system to be leashed to any convenient fixed point.

The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

WARRANTY SERVICE: CUSTOMER CARRY-IN REPAIR (CCR) OR THINKPAD EASYSERV

Warranty service for the IBM ThinkPad 380XD will be provided by ThinkPad EasyServ or Customer Carry-in to an authorized dealer/remarketer. ThinkPad EasyServ is a courier repair service in which the ThinkPad system will be picked up at the customer's location and delivered to a IBM designated repair location. The repair location will repair the system and return it to the customer. Charges for the courier service will be paid by IBM.

If information about warranty service or terms and conditions is re-quired, the customer should call the IBM HelpCenter at 800-772-2227, in the U.S. The HelpCenter will assist the user with problem isolation for hardware. Should a hardware problem be identified the HelpCenter will arrange for a courier to pick up the system for overnight delivery (where available) to the repair location. Most repairs should be made the same day the system is received at the repair location. Customers should keep the original shipping carton for shipping to the repair location. If the original shipping carton is not available, the courier will deliver a shipping carton and return to pick up the system for delivery to the repair location.

ThinkPad EasyServ is available in the U.S.A., Canada, and Mexico.

IBM THINKPAD 380XD COMPATIBILITY:
IBM tests a large number of commonly used and available hardware options for compatibility with its ThinkPad systems, using supported operating systems and configurations. In general, the user can expect that most IBM and vendor hardware options designed to run with supported operating systems, Intel-compatible system architectures and supported standard I/O interfaces to be compatible with the ThinkPad system. Some configurations, however, may not be compatible.

IBM does not warrant or support vendor hardware options, nor guarantee compatibility of those products with IBM systems. Refer to the applicable warranty and service terms provided by the respective vendors.

For existing IBM hardware options that can be used by the ThinkPad 380XD family, refer to the latest Options by IBM (OBI) catalog and Web site, as well as to the IBM sales configurator. IBM ThinkPad 380XD system supports the following industry standard interfaces:
