TP 380,385,600,770 - System shutting down intermittently after CPU replacement

Applicable to: EMEA

SYMPTOM:
After replacing the CPU, the ThinkPad shuts down unexpectedly.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 380E/ED/XD, 385E/ED/XD, 600, or 770E/ED

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
This is caused by the thermal sensor reading the CPU temperature incorrectly. Some of the new Intel processors cause the problem.

SOLUTION:
When replacing a down level CPU (see the RED P/N's in the matrix below) with a later level (the BLUE P/N), the BIOS should be upgraded to the latest level.
