PowerPC - Fails To Restore From MKSYSB Tape

Applicable to: World-Wide

Service Information:
Restoring a mksysb tape fails when using AIX 4.1.1 CDROM to boot Failure happens minutes into restore with message:
/usr/bin/ksh: /preload: not found
The workaround is to have a DOS formatted diskette in the drive with a file named "preload". Procedure is as follows:

1. create a DOS format diskette as follows :
< insert diskette in drive >
dosformat
cd /tmp
cat > preload <<EOF
#!/bin/ksh
exit 0
EOF
doswrite preload preload
< take diskette out >
Note: Do not use the "-a" flag for doswrite
2. Boot the 40P from CD to the install menus
3. Choose 3 - Maintenance
4. Choose 4 - Install from backup
5. Insert the DOS diskette in drive
6. Choose the input device ( one of the tape drives )
7. The system will then read information off of the tape for a little while, and then come up with a new install menu From here on, the installation would be similar to the other systems - non-40P.
8. Choose 2 - Change Install Settings
9. Verify that the settings for the Backup install are correct and then continue with the installation as normal.
