Launch Pad Kid-Safe Desktop

Important Information for Launch Pad Users

Give kids easy access to their files, NOT YOURS!

Launch Pad is the enchanting, animated kids' desktop designed to keep parents' files safe. You approve the programs, accessories, and documents that your children can use, while your files remain untouched. You can easily customize the Launch Pad desktop according to your kids' ages and needs. For the first time your kids can use, learn, and explore the computer all by themselves, while you feel confident that your files are safe.

The first time you run Launch Pad

The first time you run Launch Pad, you will be asked to pick an "adult" password and to create one child account. The adult password is used by Launch Pad to keep your computer secure; only you can get out of Launch Pad. You should pick a password that you will remember easily and that your kids will not guess. (IF YOU EVER FORGET YOUR ADULT PASSWORD, YOU WILL NEED TO REFER TO THIS SHEET--SO PLEASE KEEP IT IN A SAFE, SECURE PLACE.)

After you verify the password and click OK, Launch Pad will ask you to create a child account. You should pick an icon for the child and enter the name and age of the child. Launch Pad will automatically determine how to configure your computer for the child based on the age that you entered.

Use the help file

If you get lost or confused, use the on-line help that is available within Launch Pad. The help file contains all the information that you will need. You will also find "Help" buttons available throughout the product.

You should keep this sheet in a safe place. It contains important information about Launch Pad that has been left out of the on-line help file for security reasons.

Use of CD-ROM with Launch Pad

If you own software products on CD-ROM, please install these CD-ROM products using the instructions provided with each product. Then approve these applications as you normally would inside Launch Pad. When the child wants to use the CD-ROM program from inside Launch Pad, do the following:

1. Insert the CD-ROM
2. If the icon for the program does not already appear on the dashboard, click the CD-ROM icon that is displayed on the upper-right side of the dashboard. You may need to wait a few seconds while the CD-ROM drive gets ready.
3. The application should appear for your child to click on. If it does not, you may need to reapprove the application through the "Edit Child Accounts" dialog box from the File Menu.

If you forget your adult password

Launch Pad provides a way to exit Launch Pad if you forget your password. You can override your password only if you have already created a "password-override diskette". Please see the following instructions and take the time to make your password-override diskette now.

Making a password-override diskette

1. Select Windows Explorer from the Start menu.
2. Click the right mouse button on the diskette drive icon (usually A:).
3. Select Properties.
4. Type LAUNCH_PAD (exactly as written here) in the Label edit box.
5. Click OK.

If you have forgotten your adult password while in Launch Pad, you may choose a new one by pressing the Control, Shift, and P keys at the same time. Launch Pad will display a dialog box asking you to pick a drive letter for the password-override diskette. Pick the appropriate diskette drive letter for your system (usually A:), insert the password-override diskette, and click OK. You will then be asked to enter a new adult password.

If you have not already created a password-override diskette, you may reset the adult password by following these instructions:

In Windows 95:
1. Boot to a DOS prompt. Press F8 when Starting Windows 95 appears at the top of the screen, then select Safe-Mode Command Prompt only.
2. Enter: CD \WINDOWS\COMMAND
3. Enter: EDIT C:\WINDOWS\LAUNCHPD.INI
4. Look for ADULTPASSWORD=xxxx, where xxxx is your current adult password.
5. You may now either reboot your system and use your existing adult password or you may delete the current adult password from the LAUNCHPD.INI file and then restart your system. The second option will allow you to reset the password to something more easily remembered.

In Windows 3.1:
1. Boot to a DOS prompt. Press F5 when Starting PC DOS appears at the top of the screen.
2. Enter: CD \DOS
3. Enter: E C:\WINDOWS\LAUNCHPD.INI

Welcome to Launch Pad Enjoy!
