IBM PC330/PC350 - Rapid Resume fails when DX2 chip fitted
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
Customer has replaced the 486SX processor with a DX2 chip in a PC 300 Series machine and Rapid Resume no longer works.
Problem Isolation Aids:
None.
Fix:
Rapid Resume requires a feature known as "Virtual Machine Extensions" to be present in the CPU. This is standard in all recent Intel CPUs and Overdrive upgrades, but may be missing from early DX2/50 and DX2/66 chips. If an old chip is fitted then Rapid Resume will not work - however no warning messages are presented. A P87TEST program (which originates from a non-IBM source and is primarily intended to test Pentium processors for the FDIV bug) will report whether the VME feature is present.
