PS/1-Aptiva - PS/1 and Aptiva computers use a PS/2-Type mouse
Applicable to: World-Wide
A mouse is a device that moves on a flat surface to position a pointer on the screen. It allows one to select a choice or function to be performed or to perform operations on the screen, such a dragging or drawing lines from one position to another. A mouse button, when depressed, is used to select choices or initiate actions.
PS/1 and Aptiva computers use a PS/2-type mouse. The mouse is interchangeable and completely compatible with the PS/2 mouse. Any pointing device that is compatible with a PS/2 mouse port should be compatible with the system's mouse port.
The mouse is a serial device. In other words, the mouse connector is a PS/2 type, 6 pin DIN connector that plugs into a dedicated PS/2-type mouse port. This dedicated port is mounted on the system board. The signals between the mouse port and the mouse are stream, or serial signals, not parallel. The mouse is configured to use Interrupt Request (IRQ) 12. Since it is connected to the system through a dedicated PS/2 port, it does not use one of the system's Communication (COM) port settings.
