Aptiva - 2144/2168 Reloading a specific file or directory on a Aptiva with OS/2

Applicable to: United States

These instructions only apply to Aptiva Mxx models that came pre-loaded with OS/2. To load a specific directory or file, you can use the Recovery disks or use an OS/2 window.

Recovery disks can be created by using the black MPEG disk which came in the MPEG Bonus Pack. Boot with the disk, and select the option to create the Recovery disks. It will take three disks.

Follow these steps to restore a specific file or directory:

1A.) If you boot with the Recovery disk. Then it prompts your for disk 2. Select Option 6 "Goto an OS/2 window"

1B.) If you boot to OS/2, get to an open window by using the LaunchPad

2.) Change to the CD drive (usually D: or E:) and type cd recovery.

3.) Press <Enter.>

4.) To unzip a file or directory use the following command: unzip_-o_system_<directory name>/<file Name>_-d_c:/
NOTE: the ' _ ' indicates a space and the <directory name> and <file name> are the directory(ies)
and filenames you wish to reinstall (wildcards [*] are acceptable.) The system will begin to recover the directory or file name. To unzip an entire directory use *.* in place of file name.

Example:
If the WIN.INI file needed to be reloaded, here is the command line to be used in Step 4 of the above procedure:
ex. ' unzip -o system windows/win.ini -d c:/' <Enter>

5.) Press <Enter.>

After pressing Enter, the CD would be searched for the file. Once the file is found, it is reloaded.
