Aptiva - How to set video resolution to VGA mode

This document outlines a procedure for setting Aptiva systems preloaded with Windows 95 to the VGA video mode.

For systems with Trident 9680 or SIS 6205 video controllers:
1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "Display" icon.

2. The "Display Properties" screen will appear. Click the "Settings" tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the "Color Palette" list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select "16 Color" from the list.

4. Change the screen area by moving the slider under "Desktop Area" all the way to the left. You will see "640 by 480 pixels" below the slider.

5. Click "OK" in the "Display Properties" Window. If you have changed the color depth, a "System Settings Change" message box will appear stating that you must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect.

6. Click "Yes" to restart the computer.

For Cxx and Sxx systems using the ATI 3D Rage series of display adapters (all 2159, 2161, and 2162 models):
1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "Display" icon.

2. The "Display Properties" screen will appear. Click the "Settings" tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the "Color Palette" list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select "16 Color" from the list.

4. Change the screen area by moving the slider under "Screen" all the way to the left. You will see "Screen: 640 x 480" above the slider.

5. Move the slider above "Desktop" all the way to the left as well. You will see "Desktop: 640 x 480" below the slider.

6. Click Apply. A "Display Properties" box will appear stating that the display is going to be resized for 15 seconds to test the new settings. Click "OK".

7. The desktop will be resized to 640x480. A "Monitor Settings" windows will appear asking if you want to keep the new settings. Click "Yes".

8. Click "OK" in the "Display Properties" Window. If you have changed the color depth, a "System Settings Change" message box will appear stating that you must restart the computer for the new settings to take effect.

9. Click "Yes" to restart the computer.
