Aptiva - Slow Bootup

Applicable to: United States

Over a period of time, it may appear that your system is taking too long to boot up to Windows. The bootup time may not have changed since you started using the system, but the long bootup time might become an annoyance, especially if you're in a hurry to use the system.

There are three possible conditions that you might notice that you consider to be worth investigating to see if their removal might help boot up the system faster:

1.) There is an initial blue screen on the Aptivas and some PS/1s that appears when the system is powered on, which does not affect the time it takes to boot up. Even if the blue screen did not appear, the time for the bootup would not change. Thus, trying to remove this display will not have any effect on bootup time.

2.) Later in the boot process, you may see another blue screen that stays active for up to 10 seconds or more. This screen appears while the HWCHECK program is running. During this time, the HWCHECK program is gathering information about your system hardware for use in Windows in PS/1 Fitness or AptivaWare Custom Tools for viewing System Information. You can disable this line in AUTOEXEC.BAT if you wish by inserting the word REM at the start of the line. The resulting line should then look like:

REM C:\PS1TOOLS\HWCHECK

The consequence of making this change is that the System Information icon in PS/1 Fitness or AptivaWare Custom Tools may no longer be correct, particularly after you'd added new hardware or upgraded your system software. Since these types of activities are not done every day, you can leave the REM in the HWCHECK line and periodically run the HWCHECK command from the DOS prompt. A recommended interval is once a month.

Note that the information collected by HWCHECK is not used by any other system software, so any incorrect information that appears in the System Information icon will not affect anything else in the system.

3.) When Windows starts up, a logo will appear. If you don't wish to see this logo, a change can be made in the PS1START.BAT file (in the \PS1TOOLS directory) so that the command:

WIN

In that file is followed by a space and a colon character. The line would then look like:

WIN :

Note that this change will not change the time it takes to get to Windows. It will only block the logo from appearing. If you do wish to make this change, be sure to save the original copy of PS1START.BAT as PS1START.OLD or some other name before making any changes. This will allow you to restore the original copy in case of an error while editing the file.

Step 2, which is to insert the word REM at the start of the HWCHECK line in AUTOEXEC.BAT, provides the only true savings of time for bootup in the above.

Another alternative to decrease the amount of time to get to Windows is to enable Rapid Resume. This will allow you to power off the system from within Windows, power on the next day, and get back to where you left off in about 20-30 seconds, instead of a minute or more. You should always remember to save your work before powering off, just to be safe.
