Aptiva - Deleting the DRIVERS subdirectory of Windows to free-up hard disk space.
Applicable to: United States
You may "free-up" 2-3MB of fixed disk space by copying the files in the C:\WINDOWS\DRIVERS directory to diskette. By copying the files to diskette, you will gain fixed disk space, yet retain these files for later use if needed. To copy the files, follow these steps:
1. Format two 2MB diskettes.
2. From the C:\ prompt, type: CD WINDOWS and press [Enter]
3. Type: CD DRIVERS and press [Enter]. You should now be at a C:\WINDOWS\DRIVERS prompt.
4. At this prompt, type: ATTRIB +A *.* and press [Enter].
5. At the next prompt, type the following command with the first formatted diskette in the A drive: XCOPY *.* A:\ /M and press [Enter].
6. After many files (approximately 140) have been copied, you will receive an "Insufficient Disk Space" message and be taken back to the prompt. This is normal!
7. Take the first diskette out of the drive and insert the second formatted diskette.
8. You can retype the following command and press [Enter] or simply press [F3] to have the command automatically retyped: XCOPY *.* A:\ /M
9. Files will now continue to be copied where they left off from the first diskette.
10. You can label the diskettes "WINDOWS' DRIVERS FILES".
11. Once all the files have been copied, at the C:\WINDOWS\DRIVERS prompt, type: DEL *.* and press [Enter]. Press "Y" to confirm the deletion of all the files in the DRIVERS subdirectory. At this point you may remove the DRIVERS directory by following the instructions below.
- Type: CD.. and press [Enter]
- Type: RD DRIVERS and press [Enter]
Now, the DRIVERS directory and all of its files have been removed from your fixed disk. Once the DRIVERS directory has been removed, the message within the Windows program "....when prompted for a diskette, type C:\WINDOWS\DRIVERS" will no longer appear.
