Aptiva - Locating the source of a system bootup error

Applicable to: United States

Due to a change in hardware or software in the system, a subsequent bootup may result in an error message. Often, this error message may be displayed on the screen for only a short time, possibly just a flash before another program clears the screen. In other cases, the error message may be scrolled off the top of the display, allowing you no chance to determine which line or command was in error.

To slow down the execution of the lines in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, you can do the following to find out which device driver or TSR or other program is causing the problem:

1.) Exit Windows and go to a DOS prompt. Do not use the DOS Prompt in Windows for this!
2.) Press <CTRL><ALT><DEL> to reboot the system.
3.) As soon as you see the "Starting PC-DOS..." (or MS-DOS) message, press the F8 key. This will cause the bootup to stop and allow you to load each device driver and TSR one at a time.
4.) For each statement in CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT, you will be prompted to reply Yes or No to execute that statement. Reply with Y or Yes for each one. When you do, that statement will be executed and it will prompt you for executing the next statement. If you see an error message after executing a statement, you will know that the statement just executed was at fault, making it easier for you to determine what the problem is without making numerous and unnecessary changes in an attempt to make the message disappear.
5.) If you receive no error messages during the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT statements, but you do receive an error message about an invalid working directory or invalid device driver specification, the problem is in the SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI files in Windows. This is often due to a recent hardware or software change, so you may need to re-check the installation of the new hardware or software.
