PS/1 - Invoking DOS Commands For PS/1

Applicable to: United States

A fast and efficient way to invoke DOS commands automatically when your system is turned on is to add the command to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. There are many DOS commands that don't load into memory automatically when you turn your PS/1 on, but are needed to perform special functions.

For example, the GRAPHICS command (or GRAPHICS /R) must be invoked to print graphic screen images (such as the screens seen in PRODIGY) with the PRINTSCREEN key. The PRINT.COM file must be invoked to use the PRINT option on the FILE menu in the DOS 5.0 DOSSHELL. The MODE command is often used by PS/1 owners who have monochrome displays on their PS/1s. By adding these commands to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file (a file that is read every time the computer is turned on) the commands are automatically invoked when the system is turned on. Doing this saves a couple of steps. You don't have to go to the DOS prompt and issue the command.

To add DOS commands to your system's AUTOEXEC.BAT file, you can use the DOS 5.0 EDIT command:

1. Enter the following at the C: prompt:

EDIT C:\AUTOEXEC.BAT

2. DOS commands can be added anywhere in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. However, it is a good idea to put them near the beginning of the file so that they will not interfere with lines that may start other programs that would be near the end of the file. If you have "C:\DOS" in your PATH statement and DOS commands are added after this line, you will not have to give the path to the command when you add it. So, a good place to add the line would be just after the PATH= line. If you see this line in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file, move the cursor down to the end of this line. Press ENTER to open a new line. If you don't have a PATH= line, it's a good idea to put the command after the @ECHO OFF line (which is probably the first line).

3. The cursor should be flashing on the new line. If you don't have a PATH statement or, if you are adding the DOS command before the statement, type in a C:\DOS\ and the DOS command that you want to add to AUTOEXEC.BAT. If, for example, you often use the GRAPHICS /R so that you can print PRODIGY screens, you would type:

C:\DOS\GRAPHICS /R

If you normally PRINT so that you can use the PRINT option in the DOS File System, you would just type:

C:\DOS\PRINT /D:LPT1

4. Choose File from the menu bar and select Save. Choose File again and then select Exit to end the EDIT command.

5. Exit MS Windows to the PS/1 menu. Restart your system for the changes to take effect by pressing [Ctrl], [Alt], and [Delete] simultaneously.
