Aptiva - "Divide by Zero" error when installing Sierra games on K6-300MHz systems
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
"Divide by zero" error during installation of certain Sierra games.
Sierra Games Affected:
Nascar 2, Phantasmagoria 2, Leisure Suit Larry 7, Front Page Baseball 98, possibly other new releases.
Problem Description:
During the installation, these games will run a "Test" to verify that your system meets the game requirements. On K6-300 models, the CPU test will result in a "Divide by Zero" error message, and the installation will halt.
A subroutine in the test compares the execution time of a loop of DIV BX instructions. The install section runs the test to determine the CPU clock speed to verify if it meets the game requirements for best performance. The subroutine compares the resulting data with a constant, but the K6-300 is so fast that the timer value is too small, causing the "Divide by Zero".
Resolution / Workaround:
The customer should be skip the CPU test portion of the test, because the K6-300 is too fast for the test. Alternatively, they could skip the entire test, as their system does in fact exceed the game's requirements. AMD & Sierra are working to resolve this issue in future releases.
