If you are very familiar with SCSI, hardware, and the installation process, continue with 3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users. If not, continue with 4.0 Detailed installation instructions.

3.0 Quick installation instructions for experienced users
1. It is recommended to create new NT Boot Diskettes. From a DOS, 95, or OS/2 box, run WINNT /OX from the i386 directory of the CD. On an NT Server or Workstation box, the command is WINNT32 /OX.

2. Boot from the install disks. Do not allow NT to autodetect any mass storage devices. Specify the SCSI driver using the 300SCSI.EXE diskette.

4.0 Detailed installation instructions
Follow the instructions below in sequence:

4.1 Setting up the BIOS
Note: Follow the on screen directions on the following disk operations:

Boot to the BIOS upgrade diskette (listed in section 2.0) and flash the system to the appropriate BIOS revision.

4.2 Running EISA configuration
300 Server EISA Configuration Instructions:

1 Boot to the 300 EISA Configuration Diskette.

2 At the first screen press Enter.

3 Select step #2, Add or Remove Boards

4 Press Insert to add a board. Press Enter at the following screen.

5 Choose Basic VGA ISA Adapter and press Enter.

6 Select Slot #1 and press Enter. Push F10 when done.

7 Select step #3, View and Edit Details.

8 Select Total System Board Memory option. Enter the correct installed memory size.

9 Press F10 when done.

10 Select step #5, Save and Exit.

11 Remove the diskette and select to Save Configuration and Restart Computer. Press Enter to reboot.

4.3 Setting up the IBM Fast SCSI Subsystem
Note: For open bay models or any SCSI chain setup issues, download Faxback document # 33050 from 800-426-3395.

The IBM Fast Controller has no setup utilities or configurations. Ensure that the hard drive boot target is at SCSI ID 6 and boot the machine. Verify that the SCSI devices are scanned and the BIOS for the controller loads.

4.4 Installing the NOS
Note: There are two revisions of standard NT Boot disks. The older variety stops and allows skipping of mass storage device detection, the other does not. To simplify the procedure, the F6 key is used with either type.

1. Create new NT boot disks from the CD by either using a DOS CD ROM boot disk, or reading the NT CD from another machine. Do this by changing into the i386 directory and execute WINNT /OX from DOS, 95, or OS/2 machines, or WINNT32 /OX from another NT machine. Using the shrink wrap disks may work, however they may cause an error after the first boot in the installation.

2. Boot from the first NT boot disk. Be ready to hold down the F6 key until the keyboard buffer beeps when you see a black screen that says NT is detecting your hardware (if your disks react differently, merely hold F6 while booting the first disk.)

3. The disks will boot normally. At some point the install will go to mass storage device detection. There are two possible screens (follow the instruction for what you see):
a. NT is about to detect your mass storage device. If you see this, press S to skip.
b. NT has detected the following mass storage devices: If you see this, it MUST be followed by <NONE>. If this is not the case, reboot again and remember to hold down F6 (Step 2). This must say <NONE>; if it is blank or has a list, you must repeat Step 2.

4. You will now select S to specify your mass storage devices. Select to install a manufacturer supplied driver. Insert the 300SCSI.EXE diskette when prompted.

5. The install program will continue to copy files. Follow the on screen instructions for which disks it requires. NT will then move to the portion of the install which allows creation of the install partition. Create the install partition. Setup will now ask to format it. The recommended file system is NTFS.

Note: The Server 300 Fast SCSI adapter was developed before the introduction of large drives greater than 2GB. The hardware may encounter some difficulty operating large drives. Refer to the ServerProven listings at http://www.pc.ibm.com/us/compat/ for information on compatible hardware.

6. File copy will now occur. When complete, the system will prompt to reboot to the hard drive. If after this reboot the system does not find an operating system, repeat step 1 and create the boot disks. The graphical portion of the install will now proceed. Follow on screen directions for your desired configuration. When specifying the network card driver, use only downloaded or supplied drivers from the manufacturer.

7. NT is now installed. WARNING: Service Pack 3 is required for proper functioning of NT networking. Apply SP3 (provided with ServerGuide or available as a download from Microsoft). When SP3 detects newer or other manufacturer's files, you MUST select no or no to all (e.g. DO NOT OVERWRITE).

Appendix A: Installing Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 3
Note: You will need about 75MB of free disk space to unpack the Service Pack.

1. Insert the ServerGuide FixPak CD that contains Windows NT Server 4.0 Service Pack 3 into the CD-ROM drive, or download the Service Pack onto your hard disk drive (be sure to select the 128-bit version if you are using the U.S./Canadian version of Windows NT).

2. Run the file from a command prompt, or from an Explore window, locate NT4SP3_I.EXE on the CD.

3. Press Enter on the NT4SP3_I.EXE Service Pack Setup window to begin the installation.

4. Agree to the license and press Enter.

5. Select to create or not to create an Uninstall directory, then press Enter twice to continue.

6. The Service Pack is then copied to your system.

7. If any message appears asking if you want to replace a newer or OEM file, select No to All.

8. After the installation is complete, click OK or press Enter to restart (reboot) the server.
