PS/1 - Creating bootable DOS 4.01 diskettes

Applicable to: United States

Follow these instructions to create a bootable DOS diskette. This can be used when you want to run software which requires a large amount of memory on your PS/1 with a fixed disk.

1. Exit to the DOS Prompt by entering [Shift]+[F9] at the four quadrant screen.

2. Insert a blank diskette of the correct capacity in the A drive.

3. If your diskette is a high capacity diskette (labelled 2.0 MB or 2HD), type the following and then press [Enter]:

FORMAT A: /S

If your diskette is a standard 3.5" diskette (labelled 1.0MB or 2DD) type the following and press [Enter]:

FORMAT A: /S /F:720

Both commands will format the diskette and copy the operating system files IBMBIO.COM, IBMDOS.COM, and COMMAND.COM to the diskette.

NOTE: If you have a diskette based system (2011-M01 or 2011-C01) you will use the same steps as above except that you should put your DOS diskette in the A: drive before you press [Shift]+[F9]. You will then swap the DOS diskette with the diskette to be formatted when prompted on the screen.

4. After the diskette is formatted, type EXIT and press [Enter]. This will return you to where you began.

How to use the bootable diskette:

With your PS/1 turned on and at the four quadrant screen, insert the disk in the A: drive and press the [Alt]+[SysRq] (the SysRq key is located on the Print Screen key).

After the system has booted with the diskette, the A:> command prompt appears. If you have a fixed disk, type C: and press [Enter]. Then at the C:> prompt type: PROMPT $P$G and press [Enter]. This will make the fixed disk drive the current drive. You can now load the game or other software that you want to run by changing to the appropriate directory and typing in the startup command for the program.

You can change directories by typing in CD\dirname at the C:\> prompt, where "dirname" is the actual name of the directory that contains the software program. (The directory name is the name you would normally see on the folder from Your Software). If you have a diskette based system, after starting your system with the boot diskette (Alt+SysRq method), you will insert the program diskette you wish to use into the A: drive and type the start-up command for the program.

Note: If you anticipate using the boot diskette often, you should "Customize how system starts" in the IBM DOS quadrant. Click on the option "Try diskette first, then built-in DOS". Press [Enter] to save the change, exit the IBM DOS quadrant, and reboot your computer in order to activate the changes. When you want to use the boot diskette, insert the diskette into the A drive and power off. Be sure to place the diskette in the A drive prior to turning your computer on. You will be prompted for the Date and Time. Press [Enter] to accept the current date and time.
