TP 365X/XD,760E/ED/EL/ELD/X/XD - Battery Life and Windows 95

Applicable to: World-Wide

The following Tip provides some recommendations for the Thinkpad /Windows 95 user. The purpose of the document is
to guide the user and to assist in achieving an acceptable and effective battery life for his/her system.Battery life will
be discussed in terms of the Battery and the System unit and there will be additional power saving mode considerations
to be highlighted when PCMCIA Cards or CD--ROMS are attached to the Thinkpad.

1. THE BATTERY / BATTERY PACK

Although Ni-MH and Li-Ion batteries are considered to be unaffected by memory there are several points to consider
regarding the treatment of the battery.

RECOMMENDATIONS

-Do not charge the battery pack until all of its power is used
-Once you have started charging the battery pack, do not use
it until it is fully charged.

For 365X/XD or 380 system users
*******************************

The battery pack for 365X/XD or 380 is not the intelligent battery therefore system can not offer full fuel gauge program.
The remaining battery capacity is calculated from the actual battery voltage. Thus, the capacity indication is limited to 100%, 80%, 20% and 0%, and the indication can not be as accurate as the fuel gauge program offered by a system with an inteligent battery.

760E/EL/XD/XL or 765XD/XL users
**********************************

Battery pack for 760E/EL/XD/XL or 765XD/XL series is the intelligent battery and has its own internal status
check circuit. The remaining battery capacity is calculated from the battery pack through a serial communication line.
Thus, the capacity can be indicated in 1% step from 0% to 100%, and is more accurate than that of a system with the non-
intelligent battery.

2. THE SYSTEM

a) Confirm that APM is set 'On' at Windows95

At Windows 95 4.00.950, enter Control Panel, Power, then check Power management is 'Advanced'.

At Windows 95 4.00.950B, enter Control Panel, Power, then confirm the box of 'Allow Windows to manage power use on this computer' is indicated.

b) If Win95 power management is working, power management funcion provided by ThinkPad utility is effective.

Choose the power mode for battery operation from 'Operation Modes' in ThinkPad Utilities

It is recommended to use Auto or Customise mode

You can set the following at customised mode.
-Standby timer
-Suspend timer
-Display timer
-HDD timer
-Processor speed

At AUTO mode they are set to appropriate values which can be changed by the user..

For longer battery life, you are recommended to set those times as short as possible, and use a slow CPU speed.

c) Using Power Saving Mode

The following 3 power saving modes are provided by the THINKPAD :
-Standby : LCD and HDD are turned off
-Suspend : All tasks are stopped and stored in memory to save power
-Hibernation : All tasks are stopped and memory data and current status of the computer are stored in the HDD.Then the power is turned off.

For STANDBY and SUSPEND Mode set the timer using the Power Management function in Thinkpad Utilities.

To use Hibernation, select several options for Hibernation at Suspend/Hibernation/Resume option in ThinkPad utility.

3. CONSIDERATIONS FOR SUSPEND MODE WHEN A PCMCIA CARD OR CD-ROM DRIVE IS USED

a) Consideration for PCMCIA card

-PCMCIA Modem card

When the computer uses one of the following IBM modems the computer does not enter suspend mode while communication link is active. In case card detects an incoming call while in suspend mode, the computer automatically resumes normal operation.

IBM 28.8/14.4 Data/FAX modem
IBM PCMCIA Data/FAX modem
IBM High Speed PCMCIA Data/FAX modem
IBM Microelectronics 2.4/9.6 Data/Fax modem
IBM Microelectronics 14.4/14.4 Data/Fax modem
IBM Wireless Modem for ARDIS
IBM Wireless Modem for Mobitex
IBM Wireless Modem for Cellular/CDPD

-PCMCIA TR or Ethernet etc

When the computer is powered with AC power and is using one of the following IBM PC cards, it enters Standby mode, instead of Suspend mode. When the computer is powered with Battery power, the computer turns power off to the PC card, and communication stops for communication PC cards.

IBM 3270 Emulation Credit Card Adapter
IBM Token-Ring 16/4 Credit Card Adapter
IBM Credit Card Adapter for Ethernet
IBM 5250 Emulation Credit Card Adapter

When other PC cards are used and the computer enters suspend mode even in AC power mode, all application programs stop.

4. Consideration for CD-ROM

When you use Windows 95, the Windows 95 generic CD-ROM driver accesses the internal CD-ROM drive every 3 seconds to see if a disc is interted in the CD-ROM drive. This prevents a ThinkPad 365XD/760ED from entering suspend mode by the timer suspend function even if there is no actual system activity for a certain period.

To stop this auto-detect function and enable the timer suspend function, do the following.

1.Open My computer
2.Open Control Panel, then open System
3.Click on teh Device manager tab
4.Click on the + mark of CD-ROM
5.Double-click on TEAC CD-40E
6.Click on the Setting tab
7.Remove the check mark from Auto Insertion Notification

The above Tips are described in Chapter 4 of the Thinkpad User's Guides.

Other tips are
-Decrease LCD brigthness
-Stop power supply to Serial device if it is not in use

In summary , check and set the following items :
- Power Mode
- Power saving mode
- Battery conditioning
- PCMCIA and CD-ROM consideration
- LCD brigthness and unused devices
