Aptiva - Using the TV-Out function HW-MPEG2 systems

Applicable to: World-Wide

The TV-Out function on some models of the 2140 and 2142 product line, allows the user to use a standard television with their computer. When connected to the computer, the television will show exactly what would be displayed on the monitor. This includes playing DVD movies on TV, running applications, and browsing the Internet. The ability to play a DVD title, or system video, on your television set is ONLY possible when using the HWMPEG2 card that is found in select 2140 & 2142 systems.

In order for the TV-Out function to work, the television must be connected properly, and the TV-Out function enabled in Display Properties . Below are some details to provide more information on using the TV-Out function(s):

TV-Out is only supported on those models which include the HWMPEG2 card, and the system board with ATI Graphics & TV-Out chip (Planar FRU #: 93H7524).

When connecting system to a Home Theatre setup, the MPEG2 card connector labelled "S/PDIF" is also commonly referred to as the AC-3 Dolby Digital connection. This connection uses a standard 75 ohm coaxial RCA cable to carry the Dolby Digital 5.1 channel audio to a Dolby Digital A/V Receiver or Surround Sound Processor. This cable is NOT supplied with the Aptiva, nor is it typically supplied with A/V components. However it is available at most electronics retailers.

About DVD movies and MPEG-2
Your IBM Aptiva Personal Computer has a DVD-ROM drive and an MPEG-2 adapter card. With this hardware, you can view DVD movies and other DVD video output on a television, as well as on your computer monitor. To view DVD video output on a television, you need to connect the television to your computer and set the computer's display properties.

Connecting your television to your computer:
You can view DVD video output on any television that supports S-video or composite video input. To connect your television to your Aptiva PC, you need up to two cables. For video, you need an S-video or a composite video cable. If you want to listen to sound through your television, you need a Dolby Digital coaxial cable (S/PDIF) or a 3.5mm 2-channel audio cable. The video and audio cables are not provided with your computer, but they are available from most electronics retail stores.

Plug one end of the video and audio cables into the appropriate output jacks on your computer's MPEG-2 adapter card. The jacks on the MPEG-2 adapter card are accessible from the back of your tower:

Note: If you purchased an Aptiva PC with DSS capabilities, please see your setup poster for instructions on connecting these cables to your computer.

Plug the other end of the video and audio cables into the proper input jacks on your television. See your television owner's manual to identify the input jacks.

For more information about DVD, see the "What is DVD?" help topic in the Aptiva "What is . " help system. Look for this help system in Access Aptiva.

Setting display properties
To make sure that both your computer monitor and your television can display the output from your IBM Aptiva PC, you must set the display properties on your computer.

Before you turn on your television or your computer to set display properties, make sure you have correctly connected the audio and video cables to the computer and the television.

To set the display properties on your Aptiva PC, follow these steps:
1. On your Windows 95 desktop, click the Start button.
2. Move your cursor to the Settings menu.
3. Click Control Panel on the Settings menu.
4. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Display icon.
5. In the Display Properties window, click the Settings tab.
6. Click the Television check box if it is not already checked.

7. Click OK in the Display Properties window.
8. Click OK in the Display Properties message box, if this box is displayed.
9. Click Yes to verify that your display has reappeared correctly.

If your display becomes distorted, wait fifteen seconds and the display will automatically return to its previous settings. Follow these steps again without making any additional changes in the Display Properties window.

After you complete these steps, your resolution and refresh rate will be set to 800x600@60 Hz or 640x480@60 Hz. The monitor will now display the desktop differently. Typical it will look much like the example below. This is normal.

Before you can view computer output on your television, you must set the television to video mode and set the television channel to the S-video or composite channel. See your television owner's manual if you need these instructions.
