CrossBrand - Operating Systems - Options for removing DoubleSpace (or DriveSpace)

Applicable to: Canada, United States

OPTION 1

With MS-DOS 6.0, you can remove DoubleSpace and save the current data on your hard drive by using the
Move-and-Resize method. This process can be somewhat tedious, but it prevents you from having to perform the backup, format, and restore procedures. However, we ALWAYS suggest making a backup of your hard disk before undertaking major disk management tasks, such as this.

The steps for this procedure are as follows:

1. Delete any unnecessary files from your compressed drive(s).
2. To determine which drive is your uncompressed (host drive), enter: DBLSPACE /LIST at the command prompt. The uncompressed drive is listed under the CVF Filename column. For example, if H:\DBLSPACE.000 is the CVF Filename associated with drive C, drive H is the uncompressed drive.
3. Delete any unnecessary files from the uncompressed drive, including your Windows swap file.
4. Change to your compressed drive and enter: DBLSPACE /SIZE at the command prompt. The compressed drive will be reduced as much as possible, which will free some space on your uncompressed drive.
NOTE: You may have to run DEFRAG prior to step # 4.
5. Use the Move command to move files from the compressed drive to the uncompressed drive until only .5 MB of free space remains on the uncompressed drive.
6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 until your compressed drive does not contain any files you want to keep.
7. Copy the COMMAND.COM file from the compressed drive to the root of the uncompressed drive.
8. Make your uncompressed drive the current drive. For example, if drive H is your uncompressed drive, enter: H: at the command prompt. To change to the root directory, enter: CD\ at the command prompt. If you want to delete all of your DoubleSpace drives, enter the following command string at the command prompt: DELTREE DBLSPACE.*
9. If you want to delete just one of your DoubleSpace drives, use the DELTREE command to delete the CVF for the drive. (Step # 2 will provide you with the CVF names for your drive.) For example, if the CVF is DBLSPACE.000, enter the following at the command prompt: DELTREE DBLSPACE.000 to delete only this CVF.
10. Remove all references to DBLSPACE from your CONFIG.SYS file.
11. Reboot your system (CTRL+ALT+DELETE). The actual time that the removal will take depends upon how many files you have on your compressed drive and the amount of free space on your compressed drive.

OPTION 2

With MS-DOS 6.0, another option is to perform a full hard disk backup of both your drives (compressed and uncompressed). You can then reformat your hard drive into one drive and then restore your data. After restoring, delete all references to DoubleSpace in the CONFIG.SYS file.

OPTION 3

With MS-DOS 6.0, the last and easiest option would be to upgrade MS-DOS 6.0 to MS-DOS 6.2, 6.21 or 6.22. This can be done through the MS-DOS 6.22 Step-Up which can be purchased for approximately $10.00. The MS-DOS 6.22 Upgrade can be purchased for approximately $50.00. The Step-Up can only be used with MS-DOS version 6.0 or later and cannot be used with earlier DOS versions. After installing 6.2, 6.21 or 6.22, you can issue the UNCOMPRESS command and DoubleSpace will uncompress the hard drive. To do this:
(This procedure also applies, if you have already upgraded to MS-DOS 6.2, 6.21 or 6.22.)

1. Install MS-DOS 6.2, 6.21 or 6.22. (If you have already upgraded your DOS version, you do not have to re-install DOS.)
2. Completely exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt (C:\>). DO NOT use the DOS prompt icon.
3. Enter: DBLSPACE /UNCOMPRESS C:
4. Your drive will now go through "decompression". You should then reboot your computer before continuing on with any other applications.

FOR MS-DOS 6.22 ONLY!

To remove DriveSpace (MS-DOS 6.22) from a compressed hard drive, do the following:
(This assumes you have MS-DOS 6.22 installed, otherwise, you cannot use DriveSpace to compress a disk.)

1. Completely exit Windows and go to the DOS prompt (C:\>). DO NOT use the DOS prompt icon.
2. Enter: DRVSPACE /UNCOMPRESS C:
3. Your drive will now go through "decompression". You should then reboot your computer before continuing on with any other applications.
