Aptiva-PS/1 - Basic functions of Microsoft Windows 3.1

Applicable to: World-Wide

The main feature of MS Windows 3.1 is its graphical interface for the PC user.

Groups and Icons
The group icons in Windows 3.1 are displayed either as windows or as minimized icons. Within each of these group windows are more icons which represent programs. To run a program, position the mouse pointer over the program icon and quickly double-click the left mouse button.

Sizing Windows
The size of a window on the Windows desktop can be changed so that it is longer, wider, larger, or smaller. To do this, position the mouse pointer on the edge of the window to be changed in size so that the mouse pointer changes from a single arrow to a double-arrow pointer. When the pointer changes, press and hold the left mouse button, drag the pointer until the window reaches the desired size, then release the mouse button. By positioning the pointer at a corner of a window, clicking and holding the left mouse button, both the length and width of the window can be changed at the same time by dragging the mouse.

Minimizing and Maximizing
Along the top of a window on the desktop is an "action bar" that contains a button at the left with a short horizontal line within it and buttons at the right with up and down triangles. Clicking on the down triangle button minimizes the group to an icon. (Double-clicking on the group icon reopens the window.) Clicking on the up triangle button maximizes the window and covers all other group icons and open windows. Clicking on the horizontal line button at the upper left corner of the window opens a pull-down option menu. The options in this menu allow you to close, size, maximize, or minimize the window.

You can move the entire window by clicking the left mouse button on the "action bar" and holding the mouse button while dragging the pointer and group window to a new location. At the right side of some windows there will be a vertical strip called a scroll bar. The scroll bar has an up arrow at the top, a down arrow at the bottom, and a small square box positioned somewhere within the strip. When a scroll bar is present on a window, it indicates that the visible area of the window is not large enough to display all of the icons that are within the group. The scroll bar allows you to view all of the available icons by clicking on the up or down arrows on the strip. You can also position the mouse pointer on the small square within the scroll bar, hold down the left mouse button, and slide the square up and down to scroll through the contents of the window by dragging the mouse.
