TP General - How to update the ThinkPad system BIOS

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document contains information on how to update the ThinkPad system BIOS.

Caution:
When you initialize your system BIOS, any ThinkPad system settings that have been customized from the original factory defaults will be lost. This may affect areas such as IRQ settings for com ports, Infrared ports, PCMCIA modems and LAN cards. This will also affect any customized power management settings.

Note:
Initializing the BIOS is a part of the upgrade process for all 76X systems; therefore, it is strongly recommended that you go into the ThinkPad Features program and write down all of the system settings BEFORE updating your system BIOS. You will need to restore these settings after you have upgraded your BIOS.

1. The following things MUST be done prior to turning the system on with the BIOS diskette in the Floppy disk drive:
a) The system MUST be on AC Power.
b) The system MUST have a fully Charged Battery.
c) The system MUST NOT be in a docking station, port replicator, or Multiport adapter.
d) The system MUST NOT have any PCMCIA or other Optional Hardware in the system.

2. Once you meet the above requirements, you may insert the BIOS diskette in the floppy disk drive and turn the system on.
a. At this point, a blue screen will appear with two options:
- Read this First...
- Update System Program
b. Select Option 2 and then press Y for Yes when it asks, "Do you want to continue?"
c. The system then warns you to "Make Sure AC Adapter is connected firmly...then to press Enter." Next, it warns you to make sure you have a fully charged battery. After making sure this is the case, press Enter. A window comes up and states "reading from disk: DO NOT POWER OFF while the system is performing the update." If you do, the system will have to be serviced and the servicing will not be covered under warranty. The System then asks if you would like to continue? Y or N... Select Y for yes. The system then states: "Now Updating. This Process may take approximately 30 seconds. DO NOT POWER SYSTEM OFF."
d. After the update is complete, the system asks you to remove the diskette and press Enter. The system will now reboot. If the system is not a ThinkPad 76X, you are now finished. For 76X system units, proceed to step "e".
e. Initialize the BIOS by powering on the system with the F1 key depressed. When the system menu is displayed, select "config," then "initialize," then "OK?" and the system will restart. You are now finished.
