Network Station - Getting started with IBM Network Stations on the AS/400

Applicable to: World-Wide

The following information will assist you in attaching IBM Network Stations to your AS/400. This information applies to Release 3 of IBM Network Station Manager (5648-C05).

1. Prior to installing IBM Network Station Manager Release 3 software, you must have OS/400 V3R7, V4R1, V4R2 or later installed. In addition, TCP/IP Connectivity Utilities and OS/400 option 12 (Host Servers) are also required.

Note: In order to use your AS/400 as a DHCP server or provide twinax IBM Network Station support, V4R2 is required.

2. Please obtain the manual IBM Network Station Manager Installation and Use, SC41-0664. It is available online at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/netcom/pub.htm . Also, it will ship with the software when/if you order 5648-C05 on media .

Note: if you download the software from the web site, http://service.boulder.ibm.com/nc/ , please read through the on-line installation/download instructions.

3. Please familiarize yourself with (and read through) the appropriate chapters in the manual IBM Network Station Manager Installation and Use SC41-0664, located at the URL http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/netcom/pub.htm .

4. Follow the instructions in Chapter 3 of IBM Network Station Manager Installation and Use, SC41-0664, to install the required software, etc. An outline of some of the steps is listed below: Obtain the appropriate Information APARs such as II11118. Information APARS are on-line at the web site http://as400service.ibm.com/. The APAR II11118 contains critical information on required and recommended PTFs. Follow the instructions in Chapter 3 of SC41-0664 for installing: The required PTFs for OS/400, etc., if applicable. An IPL of the AS/400 will be required if any delayed PTFs are installed. Delete any previous versions of IBM Network Station Manager, Navio NC Navigator and IBM Network Station Browser as directed. IBM Network Station Manager R3 using the RSTLICPGM command. The IBM Network Station Manager for AS/400 PTFs as listed in the Informational APAR.

Note: If there are accompanying special instructions with the PTFs, follow them instead.

IBM Network Station Manager R3 (5648-C05) contains an integrated 40 bit version of NC Navigator which is installed automatically.

5. Do the steps in the Configuration section of Chapter 3 to gather information and to run the IBM Network Station Setup Assistant. This tool simplifies and automates the process required to configure your AS/400 to support IBM Network Stations. This Setup Assistant guides you through:

Verifying that all required software is installed

Configuring TCP/IP lines and interfaces used by the IBM Network Station

Starting and verifying required servers

6. DonÆt forget to read the æBefore You ContinueÆ section in Ch. 3 for important information on updating your Network StationsÆ boot monitor version, etc. Other important sections in Ch. 3 discuss æOptimizing your AS/400 Server for Network StationsÆ (performance tips) and printer configuration.

7. Now that your AS/400 has been prepared, you can set up your IBM Network Stations. Follow the instructions in the IBM Network Station Use manual, SA41-0036 to set up your IBM Network Station hardware. This manual is online at the web site: http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/netcom/pub.htm . For those interested in more details on printing, there is a very informative redbook (SG24-5212) containing cross platform printing information entitled IBM Network Station Printing Guide. There is also a pre-Release 3 redbook entitled AS/400 - IBM Network Station - Getting Started (SG24-2153) available. These manuals are available online at: http://www.redbooks.ibm.com or http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/pubs/html/netcom/pub.htm . If you are using DHCP or BOOTP and since Network Stations default to the "Network" boot method, you should be able to press the Network StationsÆ power on button and boot from your AS/400! This assumes that you have successfully completed the above steps, including completing the IBM Network Station Setup Assistant steps. If you have problems booting, ensure that all of the above steps have been completed and that you are connected to your network. Also, ensure that the required TCP servers have been started (i.e. Telnet, TFTP, etc.), that the Network Station Login Daemon is running (CALL QYTC/QYTCUSVR (æSTRTCPSVR æ)) and that the STRHOSTSVR *ALL command has been issued.

Note: A space is required between the last R and the æ in the (æSTRTCPSVR æ).
