Aptiva - How to set color depth to High Color or True Color

Applicable to: World-Wide

The color depth setting governs the number of colors that will be used to display on-screen images. Increasing the color depth can result in better image quality, but increased color depth also exacts a performance penalty, and can noticeably slow some systems. The following instructions will guide you through the process of configuring your system to use either High Color (65,536 colors), or True Color (16,777,216 colors).

OS/2:
1. At the OS/2 desktop, double-click the "OS/2 System" icon, double-click "System Setup", and then double-click the "System". object.

2. In the "System" notebook, click the "Screen" tab (it may already be selected).

3. In the "Screen Resolution" box, select either "640x480x65,536" for High Color, or "640x480x16,777,216" for True Color.

4. Close the "System" notebook. You will need to shutdown and restart OS/2 before any changes will take effect.

Windows 3.x:
1. From the Windows Program Manager, double-click the "AptivaWare" program group, and then double-click the "Custom Tools" icon.

2. Click "Display Select" from the Custom Tools menu.

3. If a "Monitor frequency undefined" message appears, click "OK".

4. In the "Monitor Resolution" box, select '"640x480".

5. In the "Select the Number of Colors" box, select either "65,536" for High Color, or "16,777,216" for True Color.

6. Click "OK".

7. You will need to shutdown Windows and restart the computer for the new settings to take effect.

Windows 95 or 98:
1. Click "Start" -> "Settings" -> "Control Panel", and then double-click the "Display" icon.

2. The "Display Properties" screen will appear. Click the "Settings" tab.

3. Change the color depth by clicking the arrow on the right-hand side of the "Color Palette" list box. A list of available color depths will be displayed, select "High Color (16 bit)" or "True Color (24 bit)" from the drop down list. Systems with an ATI Rage series video chipset will also have an option for "True Color (32 bit)".

4. Once you have chosen your color depth, click the "OK" button at the bottom of the "Display Properties" screen.

5. Depending on your Aptiva model, a "System Settings Change" box may appear stating that you will need to restart the computer for the new settings to take effect. If this box appears, click "Yes" to restart the system.
