2.25GB Hard Drive - Setting wide negotiation in the SCSISelect Utility
Applicable to: World-Wide
Symptom:
On a PC Server system machine type 8640, model 0YT, using an Adaptec 2940W PCI SCSI adapter (BIOS v1.11s), the 2.25GB hard disk drive (FRU p/n 42H1821) appears to be inoperable. FDISK shows 'No Fixed Disks Present' and the SCSISelect Utiltiy for the 2940W identifies that the capacity of the drive as 1696 Mbytes. Using the SCSISelect Utility and from the system environment, the following conditions were involved:
OS/2 Warp Server was being used on a PC Server 320 with the Adaptec 2490W PCI SCSI Adapter (BIOS v1.11x). Wide negotiation was not enabled in the SCSISelect Utility for the drive.
Resolution:
The BIOS for the Adaptec 2940W PCI SCSI adapter handles wide negotiation for this hard drive (FRU p/n 42H1821) differently than for other drives. For this hard disk drive, you must make sure that wide negotiation = Yes.
In general, fast/wide SCSI devices will require wide negotiation. This problem may occur with other SCSI devices and fast/wide SCSI adapters.
