IBM PC SERVER RACK SYSTEMS

The IBM Netfinity Rack Systems product line consists of:

o Rack-mountable Netfinity and PC Server Systems

o Storage expansion units

o Tape libraries

o Networking products

o Uninterruptible power sources from American Power Conversion (APC)

o Netfinity Rack -- cabinet and options

o Netfinity Rack Configurator program

The following sections concentrate on the IBM 9306 model 900 Netfinity Rack enclosure and its role in supporting the mission of the IBM Netfinity Rack Systems product line.

RACK CABINETS AND SUITES

The new IBM 9306 model 900 Netfinity Rack enclosure conforms to the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) standard 310-D for cabinets, racks, panels, and associated equipment. This widely used industry standard sets the dimensions and mounting hole characteristics for housing various equipment from multiple vendors in a common rack cabinet. The IBM Netfinity Rack enclosure is a 19-inch, type A cabinet with universal hole spacing and 42U of vertical mounting space. One U is equal to 1.75 inches (44.45 mm).

The Netfinity Rack enclosure can be used as a single, stand-alone rack cabinet, or up to eight can be arranged into an interconnected rack suite.

SUPPORTED PRODUCTS

A wide range of equipment is supported by the IBM Netfinity Rack enclosure. This range of equipment, whether from IBM or other suppliers, generally falls into one of the following three categories:

1. Direct rack mounting -- the standard product provides the necessary brackets, slides, or other mounting hardware to fit an EIA 19-inch standard cabinet.

2. Special mounting kit available -- appropriate mounting hardware is available as a separately ordered product.

3. Stand-alone product -- a desktop or small, floor-standing product can be accommodated on a fixed or sliding shelf within the cabinet.

IBM Netfinity Rack Options are available to provide special mounting kits and accommodate stand-alone products.

SHARED CONSOLE FACILITY

Rack systems may have only a single server system or many server systems. Each server has the need for a console. Rack systems need ways to mount the console devices and share them across the servers.

IBM Netfinity Rack Options are available to support from 1 to 64 servers sharing one console.

POWER DISTRIBUTION AND CONTROL

Housing multiple servers and other equipment in a single cabinet requires consideration of the power needs of each device and the effect of the combined needs on the customer's power source.

IBM Netfinity Rack Options include several power distribution alternatives. You can choose one or two of the following for each cabinet. Power should not be provided across cabinets.

Low-voltage (100-120 V) power distribution unit

High-voltage (200-240 V) power distribution unit

120 V 1400 VA uninterruptible power source

220-240 V 1400 VA uninterruptible power source

120 V 3000 VA uninterruptible power source

220-240 V 3000 VA uninterruptible power source

NOTE: PDU and UPS product availability is country specific.

The power needs of each specific rack cabinet configuration and customer power facility should dictate the selection of the above power options. The customer needs to provide appropriate emergency power off controls at the power source. Equipment with switchable power supplies must be set to the appropriate voltage range.

SUPPORTED CONFIGURATIONS

An extremely large number of different Netfinity Rack System configurations can be implemented. To aid in the creation and validation of these configurations, IBM is providing a no charge program, the IBM Netfinity Rack Configurator.

The Netfinity Rack Configurator is designed to aid in the component selection, installation planning, device placement, cable management, and configuration validation of an IBM Netfinity Rack System-based solution.

You may obtain a copy of the Netfinity Rack Configurator by accessing the IBM Netfinity Home Page on the World Wide Web at address:

EASE OF INSTALLATION/UPGRADE/RELOCATION

To allow maximum configuration flexibility, the IBM Netfinity Rack product line comes as a basic rack cabinet and separate optional features. The basic rack cabinet is preassembled and shipped on a pallet.

On its caster, the Netfinity Rack is capable of being rolled through standard doors as small as 82 inches by 30 inches.

Upgrades of individual servers or equipment can be done without disrupting the other systems housed in the same rack.

A loaded rack can weigh up to 1100 lb (500 kg) on its casters. A loaded rack can be relocated (rolled on the casters) within a room or building. Reasonable precautions must be taken before relocating a loaded rack. You must review the relocation information is the Planning and Installation Guide.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

The IBM PC Server Rack Systems product line is intended to address our customer's needs for centralization, consolidation, and clustering of server systems and efficient space management. The Netfinity Rack is a robust cabinet solution that addresses space utilization, cooling, stability and mobility, sharing of console devices, ease of installation, cable management, low-cost, flexible customization, and safety and power considerations. It is the design culmination of years of experience of IBM and its business partners, working with customers worldwide, and conformance to industry standards.

The basic Netfinity Rack enclosure (9306900) comes standard with front and rear locking doors, front and side stabilizer brackets, front and rear EIA mounting flanges, four heavy-duty casters and leveling pads. The base cabinet weighs approximately 276 lb (125 kg) and has a load capacity of 824 lb (374 kg) if moved on its casters, 1424 lb (646 kg) if static. The internal dimensions allow support for units that are up to 30 inches (762 mm) deep, including cable management area. The EIA mounting flanges are 28.125 inches (714 mm) apart. The front door is approximately 3 inches (76 mm) from the front mounting flange. The rear door is approximately 2 inches (51 mm) from the rear mounting flange.

The overall external dimensions of the cabinet are 23.5 inches (600 mm) wide, 34.5 inches (880 mm) deep, and 81.5 inches (2070 mm) high. The cabinet can roll through door openings that are as small as 30 inches (762 mm) by 82 inches (2083 mm).

A single, stand-alone Netfinity Rack enclosure requires a Side Panel Kit which provides two locking side panels to complete the cabinet. Up to eight Netfinity Rack enclosures may be arranged into an interconnected rack suite. A Rack Attachment Kit is required to attach one rack cabinet to another. The suite requires only one Side Panel Kit.

The front and side stabilizer brackets must be used on single, stand-alone cabinets. They include a provision for bolting to the floor. If bolted to the floor, the side stabilizer brackets may be moved to a location inside of the rack footprint.

The following IBM Netfinity Rack Options are available:

o Side Panel Kit (94G6669)

This option provides two locking side panels. One side panel kit is required for each stand-alone rack cabinet or multirack suite.

o Rack Attachment Kit (94G7446)

The rack attachment kit provides brackets, screws, and trim pieces to connect two racks together into a suite. An additional rack attachment kit is needed for each additional rack added to the suite.

o Blank Filler Panel Kit (94G6670)

The blank filler panel kit provides two 1U panels, one 3U panel, and one 5U panel. The panels may be used to cover unused rack mounting space.

SHARED CONSOLE FACILITY

Rack systems may have only a single server system or many server systems. Each server has the need for a console. Rack systems need ways to mount the console devices and share them across the servers.

The following IBM Netfinity Rack Options are available:

o Keyboard Tray (94G7443)

The keyboard tray is a sliding tray for a keyboard and a mouse. It can support up to 24 lb (11 kg). The tray can hold a keyboard that is 19.7 in (50 cm) wide, 8.25 in (21 cm) deep, and 1.5 in (3.8 cm) high in 1U of rack space. If the keyboard is higher, it will require 2U of rack space. The keyboard is stored in the tray when not in use. When needed, the keyboard is lifted from inside the tray and laid across the tray for use. This allow many existing PC
server keyboards and large keyboards to be used. A 8 ft (2.4 m) extension cable set is included to connect the keyboard and mouse to the console server selector switch or the server. A small area on the left side of the tray is available to store a mouse when not in use. See below for a list of supported keyboards and pointing devices.

o Monitor Compartment (94G7444)

The monitor compartment provides space for various monitors. It can support up to 75 lb (34 kg). The inside dimensions of the monitor compartment are 17 in (44 cm) wide and 17in (43 cm) deep. The amount of rack space required will depend on the monitor used. This typically ranges from 6U to 10U (10.5 to 17.5 in) (267 to 445 mm). Space is provided behind the monitor for the console server selector switch. This minimizes vertical rack space for the console. See below for a list of supported monitors.

o Console Server Selector Switch (94G7445)

The console server selector switch connects up to eight IBM Netfinity and PC Servers to a single console. The multiport console server selector switch sits between the video monitor, keyboard, and point devices and the server system units.

Multiple switch units can be interconnected in a two-level tier arrangement to support up to 64 servers. A primary switch can support up to eight secondary switches which each support up to eight server systems.

The operator controls the switch through use of the console keyboard and the monitor. The server selector switch allows the user, with a special key sequence, to select which server is connected to the console devices. An on-screen facility indicates to the user which server is currently using the monitor, keyboard, and pointing device. Other servers are unaware of the switching action. The server selector operates independently of the server's operating system; therefore, different operation systems may be used on the different servers in the same rack suite. The server selector switch manages the console communications with all of the servers independently and simultaneously.

The selector switch is optionally housed behind the monitor compartment or in a special compartment in the rack side wall to save vertical rack mounting space. Required brackets are provided.

o Console Cable Set - 12 ft (94G7447)

This cable set connects a server's mouse, keyboard, and monitor ports to a console server selector switch. The cable set is long enough to reach between adjacent racks. The video cable supports VGA and SVGA.

Ease of Installation/Upgrade/Relocation

To allow maximum configuration flexibility, the IBM Netfinity Rack product line comes as a basic rack cabinet and separate optional accessories. The basic rack cabinet is preassembled and shipped on a pallet.

On its caster, the Netfinity Rack is capable of being rolled through standard doors as small as 82 inches by 30 inches.

As shipped from the factory, the Netfinity Rack weighs approximately 276 lb (125 kg). Loading should not exceed a maximum of 1424 lb (646 kg). Total weight should not exceed 1700 lb (771 kg) if static, 1100 lb (500 kg) if dynamic.

Allow at least 30 inches (762 mm) in front and 25 inches (635 mm) in the rear of the cabinet for operational access; 60 inches in front, 30 inches (762 mm) in the rear, and 36 inches (914 mm) on the side for servicing the rack or the equipment. It is recommended to have 12 inches (305 mm) of clearance above the cabinet for proper cooling.

Upgrades of individual servers or equipment can be done without disrupting the other systems housed in the same rack.

Adding a rack cabinet to an existing rack involves the following steps:

1. Remove the side panel.

2. Place the new rack next to the existing racks, level, and align.

3. Bolt the racks together using the Rack Attachment Kit (94G7446).

4. Install equipment and cables.

5. Re-attach the side panel to the new rack.

Refer to the Planning and Installation Guide and the Rack Attachment Kit Installation Instructions for more detailed instructions.

RELOCATION: A loaded rack can weigh up to 1100 lb (500 kg) on its casters. A loaded rack can be relocated (rolled on the casters) within a room or building. Reasonable precautions must be taken before relocating a loaded rack.

o Reduce the weight of the rack by removing equipment, if possible.

o Inspect the route you plan to take and eliminate potential hazards.

o Verify that the route you have chosen can support the weight of the loaded rack.

o The rack can be rolled through a 30 in (76 cm) by 82 in (208 cm) door opening.

o A minimum of two trained moving or relocation personnel must be used to relocate a loaded rack (one person behind the rack and one person in front of the rack).

o Make sure all devices, drawers, doors, and cables are secure.

o Make sure the four leveling pads are raised to their highest position.

o Make sure the stabilizer brackets are removed.

o Do not use a ramp inclined at more that ten degrees.

A long distance relocation requires heavy equipment (servers, UPS) to be removed from the rack and the rack packed in appropriate packaging material.
