Aptiva - Internet connection problems / Problems with Advantis (Abridged Version)

Applicable to: United States

Problem:
1. Connecting to the IBM Global Network.
2. Creating a PPP configuration.
3. Logging on to Advantis using an internet account/user ID.

Resolution:
1. Right click the current IBM Network Connection icon.
2. Click properties.
3. Have phone number available.
4. Right Click icon again and click delete.
5. Double-click Make New Connection Icon.
6. Type IBM PPP Network Connection in name and ensure that MWAVE 28.8 Data/Fax VOD Modem is selected in Modem.
7. Click Next.
8. Type in the area code and phone# from previous the icon.
9. Click Next and Click Finish.
10. Then right click the new icon (you may have to maximize and refresh the window) and click properties.
11. Click Server Type.
12. In the Dial-up Server select: PPP: Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet.
13. Under Advanced options and allowed network protocols, remove all checks except that beside TCP/IP.
14. Click TCP/IP Settings.
15. Select "Server Assigned IP Address."
16. Select "Specify name server addresses."
17. Beside Primary DNS, enter following values 165 * 87 * 194 * 244
18. Beside Secondary DNS, enter following 165 * 87 * 201 * 244
19. Remove the Check from Use IP header compression.
20. Ensure there is a check beside Use Default Gateway on Remote Network.
21. Click OK, OK, OK, and perform a Start>Shutdown>Reboot.
22. Use the new icon.

When prompted to enter User Name, type(without quotes) "internet.account.userid", where account is the 4 digit code
or ??Inet and userid is the userid IF (BIG IF) this is their first time.

Logging on - afterwards you will only need the password. Enter the password.

Delete the icon stems from the PPP connection which seems to be the new default; unfortunately the preloaded icon has a
script file associated with it in the Scripting Utility in Programs>Accessories; the INTERNET.SCP is a SLIP script
which hangs the protocol negotiation; that plus the network icon in the Control Panel may have improper or missing components;
below are required:

Client for Microsoft Networks
Dial-Up Adapter
TCP/IP
