TP 380/D/E/ED,385D/E/ED,770 - Left channel only is being played back after recording audio

SYMPTOM:
When playing back audio that was recorded through the Windows 95 Sound Recorder, the audio is being played back only through the left speaker.

CONFIGURATION:
ThinkPad 380/D/E/ED,385D/E/ED and 770 running Windows 95 and Sound Recorder is configured as CD Quality for output.

SOLUTION:

  1. In Sound Recorder, click on Edit ==> Audio Properties.
  2. Press "Customize" in "Recording" right side of "Preferred Quality:"
  3. Select "44,100 Hz, 16bit Mono" in "Attributes:".
  4. Press "Save As..."
  5. Put new name such as "CD Quality Mono" under "Save this format as".
  6. Press "OK".
  7. Press "OK" in "Customize" panel.
  8. Exit "Audio Property" Panel.

This will enable the Sound playback from the Both Speakers in CD Quality.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
The playback problem is highlighted when using the "CD Quality" option. If "Radio Quality" is chosen, then playback occurs through both speakers.

1. Microphone input level
If the internal microphone input level is low when using telephony or sound recorder type of applications, please make sure the following volume settings A and B:

A. Master out
1. Double-click on the small speaker icon at the bottom right of the Windows desktop.
2. If the Mic column is not displayed, select Options on the upper left corner of the window and select Properties.
3. Put a check mark on Mic and press OK. You return to the "Master Out" window.
4. Set the Mic volume slide bar to Max. position.
5. Exit the "Master Out" window.

B. Multimedia properties/Recording volume
1. Click on the Start button, and select Setting, Control Panel, and Multimedia.
2. Select the Audio tab.
3. Set the recording volume slide bar to Max. position.
4. Click on OK to exit the window.

2. Recording quality
If you feel audio quality you recorded is not good, change following setting.
1. Click on the Start button, and select Setting, Control Panel, and Multimedia.
2. Select the Audio tab.
3. Select CD Quality in Preferred Quality menu.
4. Click on OK to exit the window.
