TP General - Using your ThinkPad with a digital phone line

Applicable to: World-Wide

Warning: Connecting a digital phone line, also known as a PBX, to your IBM ThinkPad may cause damage to your modem if done improperly.

First you must determine if your modem is digital capable or not:

a) Currently none of the the IBM ThinkPad modems are digital capable. Connecting them directly to a digital phone system may cause damage. Some ThinkPads come with a fuseable DAA intended to protect the internal circuits. This does not mean that the modem can be used with a digital phone system. This merely reduces the chance of damaging your ThinkPad should you connect it directly to a digital phone line.

b) When using a PCMCIA or external modem, please check the documentation that came with the modem or contact the manufacturer to determine if the modem is digital capable. If it is digital capable, then you may connect it as per the manufacturer's instructions.

To use a digital phone line with your IBM ThinkPad modem or any analog (standard) modem, you must use a digital phone enabler. This is a device that converts the digital signals into an analog signal compatible with your modem.

Currently, Port Inc, provides the only ThinkPad proven product. You can contact them at http://www.port.com/docs/acpth.htm for specific information on their product.
