TP 310E/ED, 315ED - Product Announcement (refresh models)
Applicable to: World-Wide
IBM's line of ThinkPad 310E/310ED notebooks increases its power and capacity again. Compared to the existing 310,315E/ED ThinkPads that have (1.6GB,133MHz Pentium processor w/MMX, 16MB, 12.1 SVGA DSTN, NiMH, 10X CD-ROM),the IBM ThinkPad 310E/310ED offers a 166MHz(1) Pentium(R) processor with 256KB L2 cache and MMX(TM) technology, plus a user-upgradeable 2.1GB(2) hard disk drive (HDD). ThinkPad 310ED models have a 20X maximum variable speed CD-ROM.
These are the most affordable ThinkPad systems that IBM offers. The great price, ultimate portability, and upgraded technological features of these notebooks will appeal to first-time users or experts, home or business users, small or large enterprises, and students or professionals.
INTENDED CUSTOMERS
The ThinkPad 310E/310ED is for individuals, students, and home-based customers that typically shop in a retail channel for an affordable mobile PC multimedia solution that they can use wherever they go.
These entry level ThinkPad notebooks are ideal for students and home based customers who need an affordable portable PC that allows them the flexibility to work at home, school, or even while on vacation.
For EMEA Models without the standard 20X maximum variable speed CD-ROM can be optionally dealer upgraded.
Customers have a choice between 16MB(2) or 32MB of 64-bit EDO memory as standard (customer-upgradeable to a maximum of 64MB) and a high-quality,ergonomic wrist-rest keyboard with the IBM TrackPoint III pointing device. The audio subsystem supported is Sound Blaster Pro.
The ThinkPad 310E/310ED system features a bright extra large 12.1-inch (measured diagonally) SVGA TFT (Thin Film Transparency) or DSTN (Dual Speed Twisted Nematic) display.
The IBM ThinkPad 310E for Japan offers a 150MHz Pentium processor with a user-gradeable 1.6GB HDD. This system also has an 11.3-inch SVGA TFT (measured diagonally) display.
All systems have Microsoft(+) Windows(+) 95 operating system software.
Notes -
(1): MHz only measures internal clock speed, not application performance. Many factors affect application performance.
(2): MB = one million bytes and GB = one billion bytes when referring to hard disk drives. Accessible capacity may vary.

ENVIRONMENTAL RELIABILITY: IBM ThinkPads computers are designed, built, and tested for high quality and reliability. When used properly in standard business environments, a ThinkPad system should be a reliable computing asset for many years. However, harsh environments and abuse can damage ThinkPads since they are not intended to withstand extreme
temperatures, dust, shock, or other physical environments. For example,a ThinkPad should not be used in non-stationary environments, such as in-vehicle installations, without additional casting or shock dissipation. IBM warrants that the ThinkPad will conform to its Official Published Specifications when used in a suitable physical operating environment.
For information on rugged computers available from IBM, refer to www.networking.ibm.com/wireless or contact your IBM industry sales specialist. (For additional information about supported environments, refer to the Operating Environment section of this document.)
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS:
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS: The following operating systems are supported. Refer to the LIMITATIONS section for support issues unique to each operating system.
IBM PC DOS 7
Microsoft(+) Windows(+) 95 (OSR2)
Microsoft(+) Windows(+) Version 3.11
MS-DOS(+) Version 6.22
NOTE: Prior versions of these operating systems are not supported, for example, PC DOS 6.3, Microsoft Windows 3.0, and MS DOS 6.0.

BIOS setup program is text-based and English only. No NLS and DBCS support.
Video BIOS occupies 48KB of conventional memory area in C0000 - CFFFF. ThinkPad needs 32KB for video. The size of available conventional memory is reduced by 16KB.
Infrared, port replicator and docking stations are not supported.
BIOS has no built-in diagnostics.
Booting from PC Card (ATA/SRAM) is not supported.
Standby and Hibernation power saving modes are supported, but not suspend mode.
Industry setup utility "Notebook Manager" is used for basic functions instead of "ThinkPad Feature." User interface is different from "ThinkPad Feature."
Preloaded OS is limited to WIN95 (OSR2).
OS/2 and Windows NT are not supported.
To make backup diskettes, Microsoft backup utilities in WIN95 are used instead of IBM's diskette factory.
There is no machine serial number in system BIOS ROM.
External display and external keyboard are not available when LCD is closed.
CardBus is not available under native DOS/Windows 3.11 environment.
DOS/WIN 3.11 applications, which assume IREQ3 or IREQ4 (i.e. communication applications), and ZV port cannot run simultaneously.
PCMCIA card is not supported that is not compatible with Phoenix
PCMCIA driver under DOS/WIN 3.11 (i.e. Accton EN2212 Ethernet adapter).
Speaker volume adjusted by Fn key (Fn + F5) does not affect the volume scale controlled by the audio function provided by operating systems.
The socket status of lower slot of PCMCIA connectors is shown at the top of the socket status panel of WIN95 "PC Card Property Panel." (Status of higher slot appears at the bottom.) Needs attention when a PC card is removed.
A newly inserted CardBus PC Card may not be recognized by WIN95; that is, WIN95 may mistake it for a previously installed CardBus PC Card.
When the user starts the computer running WIN95 (OSR2) with a 3Com 3c562 multi-function PC Card inserted, the computer stops responding, or the network is inaccessible. This problem is avoided by disabling the OSR2 "Turn off PC Card modems when not in use" power feature.
To use the modem wake up function, the customer needs to disable the "Turn-off PC-Card modem when not in use" function.
Speaker volume level adjusted by the Hot Key (Fn + F5) is not kept after the computer is restarted.
The diagnostics routine "Execute device self diagnostics / Test:
Drive Diagnostics" of ATADIAG.EXE is not supported for:
PCMCIA Intelligent Flash memory 5MB (85G1212)
PCMCIA Intelligent Flash memory 10MB (85G1220)
PCMCIA Intelligent Flash memory 20MB (85G1224)
PCMCIA Intelligent Flash memory 40MB (85G1228)
3Com EtherLinkIII + Modem 336 PC card is not supported.
NewMedia Bus Toaster PCMCIA is not supported under DOS/Windows 3.11.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CABLE ORDERS: All cables are included with the system.
INSTALLABILITY: This ThinkPad family of systems requires approximately 20 minutes for installation. Installation includes unpacking, setting up, and powering on the system. Additional time is required to install other memory and other optional features.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL
STANDARD SECURITY FEATURES
Electronic Personalization
Passwords
A Power-on Password (POP) protects the system from unauthorized use. If a POP is set, the password prompt appears each time the system is turned on.
A Setup Password provides a higher level of security than the POP. The Password protects the system functions from being used by unauthorized users and protects the hardware configuration from unauthorized modification. The Password prompt appears when the hardware configuration is changed.
OPTIONAL SECURITY FEATURES
The user can attach a Kensington Lock to the keyhole on the back of the computer. This allows the system to be leashed to any convenient fixed point.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.
