TP General - How to use and configure Windows 95 HyperTerminal

Using HyperTerminal
The following should work for any modem. This document presumes you have checked the Properties in Device Manager and confirmed that all settings are correct.

How to establish a HyperTerminal Session
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Programs.
3. Click on Accessories.
4. Click on HyperTerminal.
5. Double click on Hypertrm (or Hypertrm.exe).
6. When HyperTerminal starts, you will be presented with a window titled "Connection Description". In the Name field, type 'Test' or any other description you wish and click on the OK button.
7. In the Area code field, enter the area code for the number you are calling. (ex. 919, for the IBM BBS)
8. In the Phone number field, enter the phone number you wish to call. (ex. 517-0001, the IBM BBS)
9. In the Phone Number window, click on the down arrow for the "Connect using" option and select your modem, e.g. "ThinkPad 28.8 Data Fax VOD Modem" or "IBM 28.8 PCMCIA Modem".
10. Click on the OK button.
11. On the Connect Screen, click on Dial to dial the number you have entered or click on Cancel to cancel dialling the number and enter terminal mode.
12. When you exit HyperTerminal, you will be asked if you want to save the session. Answer Yes.

You have successfully created a session using HyperTerminal.

How to change the baud rate of your HyperTerminal session.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Programs.
3. Click on Accessories.
4. Click on HyperTerminal.
5. Create a new HyperTerminal session or start a previously created session by clicking on its icon.
6. From the Connect window, click on the Modify... button.
7. From the properties window, click on the Configure... button.
8. On the 'modem name' Properties, window, click on the down arrow for the "Maximum speed" option. Select the desired port speed. Note: This setting affects the rate at which data is transferred between the computer and the modem, not the actual speed of the transmission between modems.
9. Click OK.
10. Click OK.
11. Click on Dial to dial using the new settings, or click on Cancel to cancel and enter terminal mode.

You have now successfully changed the speed of your modem.

How to choose your protocol and download with HyperTerminal.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Programs.
3. Click on Accessories.
4. Click on HyperTerminal.
5. Create a new HyperTerminal session or start a previously created session by clicking on its icon.
6. Click on Dial to establish a connection to the remote system.
7. Once the connection is established and you have told the remote system to transfer the files, go to the Transfer menu and select "Receive File...".
8. In the "Placed received file in the following folder" area, specify the folder (or directory) were you want to save the file(s) you are downloading to.
9. In the "User receiving protocol" area, click on the down arrow and chose the protocol you wish to use. The default should be Zmodem. This is the preferred protocol to use with the IBM BBS.
10. Click on receive. The file(s) will be downloaded to your hard drive to the specified folder (directory).

You have successfully selected your download protocol and downloaded a file.

How to turn error correction off.
1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on Settings.
3. Click on Control Panel.
4. Double click on Modems icon.
5. Select your modem for the list of installed modems. If you only have one modem installed, it will be selected by default.
6. Click on Properties button.
7. Click on the Connection Tab.
8. Click on the Advanced... button.
9. On the Advanced Connection Settings window, click on the box next to Use error control to remove the check mark.
10. Click the OK button.
11. Click the OK button.
12. Click the Close button.

You have now successfully disabled error correction for your modem.

Note: To re-enable error correction, repeat the above process and restore the check mark next to User Error Control in step 9.
