CrossBrand - Using the MAKEINI command in OS/2 Warp

Applicable to: World-Wide

Before proceeding with these procedures it is recommended that you make an archive first. To make an archive, follow steps 1 and 2 listed below. At the Recovery screen you will be given the option to create an archive.

To run a Constructive MAKEINI follow the following steps (this is also known as "Rebuilding the Desktop" (p.219 for Red Spine, p.218 for Warp w/ WINOS2 in the Warp User's Guide):
1. Power on the computer.
2. When it says OS/2 Warp in the upper left corner, press the ALT+F1 key.
3. For WARP 3, choose C: (Go to Command Line); For WARP 4, choose F2 (Go to Command Line);
4. When the prompt comes up, you will need to type:
CD OS2 and then hit Enter.
5. At the C:OS2 prompt, type:
MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter.
6. It should come back saying MAKEINI.EXE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED. Type:
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter.
7. It should come back saying MAKEINI.EXE SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED. Type:
ATTRIB -H -S -R \WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.
8. Then type:
DEL \WP?ROOT.?SF and press Enter.
9. Restart the computer

In some instances, you may need to perform a destructive MAKEINI in order to clear up any further issues, if the "Rebuilding the Desktop" procedure does not appear to fix the problems (see "Recovering the User .INI Files", p.221 for Warp Red, p.220 for Warp w/ WINOS2). Note: by doing a destructive MAKEINI, any changes you made to your desktop will be lost.

To do a destructive MAKEINI proceed with steps 1-4 above and then:
1. At that prompt, type:
ATTRIB -H -S -R OS2*.INI and press Enter.
2. Then type:
REN OS2.INI OS2.OLD and press Enter.
3. Then type:
MAKEINI OS2.INI INI.RC and press Enter.
4. Then type:
REN OS2SYS.INI OS2SYS.OLD and press Enter.
5. Then type:
MAKEINI OS2SYS.INI INISYS.RC and press Enter.
6. Then press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart the computer.
