Aptiva - Restoring MS-DOS Backup files to PC-DOS
Applicable to: United States
Commands used to backup data require a compatible command to restore the data. For example, if you use the BACKUP command provided with PC DOS, you must use the RESTORE command provided with PC DOS; if you use the CPBACKUP command to start the full-screen Central Point Backup program, you must use the Restore function available from this same full-screen Backup program.
The MSBACKUP (Microsoft Backup) program provided with Microsoft's MS-DOS operating system, therefore, is only compatible with their own Restore program. If you used MSBACKUP with your MS-DOS system to back up your files, then you cannot use the CPBACKUP function in PC-DOS to directly restore the files. However, if you still have access to the MS-DOS system, you can copy the source files directly to diskette and load them into your system with the COPY or XCOPY commands, or you can use the Windows File Manager to copy the files to the PC-DOS system.
MSBACKUP and CPBACKUP were developed by separate software companies, and they each developed their own methods of storing files on disk for use as backups. The backup methods used are not compatible, and it is therefore impossible to use the backups from one system to restore files on the other system.
If you do not have many MS-DOS files to restore to the PC-DOS system, then simply copying the files to diskette and then copying them into the PC-DOS system will be sufficient. If you have a large number of files or you do not have access to the original MS-DOS system any longer, then you may be able to locate a compatible backup utility. For example, Norton Backup or Symantec Backup can be used to restore MS BACKUP files to the PC-DOS system.
Please Note: You should avoid copying any files in the \DOS, \WINDOWS, or \PS1TOOLS directories of the MS-DOS system to the PC-DOS system. Doing so may cause your current PC-DOS system to be corrupted, possibly requiring a full reload of the original software.
