IBM IntelliStation - Configuring MIDI ports under Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3

The following instructions are provided for getting MIDI to work correctly under Windows NT 4.0 after installing Service Pack 3. The instructions and accompanying CSPNP.INF file are available for download under filename MIDINT40.EXE from the IBM Personal Computer File Library at the following link:

Outline:
1. Uninstall the audio device driver.
2. Replace the CSPNP.INF file in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory with the supplied replacement file.
3. Enable MIDI and Disable ACPI.
4. Reinstall the audio device driver.
5. Install the low level MIDI driver.
6. Install the MPU-401 driver.
Configuration Steps:
1. Start Windows NT v4.0
2. Click on "Start", then "Settings", then "Control Panel"
3. Double click on "MultiMedia"
4. Click on the "Devices" tab
5. Double click on "Audio Devices"
6. Click on "Audio for CrystalWare Audio Driver"
7. Click on the "Remove" button
8. Click on "Yes" to confirm removing it
9. Click on "Don't Restart Now"
10. Click on "Start", then "Programs", then "Command Prompt"
11. Type "cd \winnt40\system32" and press enter
12. Type "rename cspnp.inf cspnp.ibm" and press enter
13. Type "copy a:cspnp.inf cspnp.inf" and press enter
14. Click on "Start", then "Shutdown"
15. Select "Shutdown the computer?", then click on "Yes"
16. When told it is now safe to turn off your computer, power the system off, then back on (rebooting is not sufficient!)
17. Press the F1 key when prompted during POST to get into the Configuration/Setup Utility.
18. Select "Devices and I/O Ports" from the Configuration/Setup Utility screen and press the Enter key
19. Select "Audio Setup" and press the Enter key
20. Select "Game/MIDI Port"
21. Press the right arrow key to change the setting from Disabled to Enabled
22. Press the Escape key to exit the Audio Setup screen
23. Press the Escape key again to exit the Devices and I/O Ports screen
24. Select "Power Management" from the Configuration/Setup Utility screen and press the Enter key.
25. Select "ACPI BIOS Mode" from the Power Management screen
26. Press the right arrow key to change the setting from Enabled to Disabled
27. Press the Escape key to exit the Power Management screen
28. Press the Escape key again to exit the Configuration/Setup Utility screen
29. Select "Yes, save and exit the Setup Utility" and press the Enter key to exit setup
30. When the computer starts rebooting, power it off, then back on (rebooting is not sufficient!)
31. Start Windows NT v4.0 again
32. Click on "Start", then "Settings", then "Control Panel"
33. Double click on "MultiMedia"
34. Click on the "Devices" tab
35. Click on the "Add" button
36. Click on "CrystalWare Audio Driver" from the list of drivers.
37. Click on "OK"
38. If told the CS32BA11.DLL driver is already on your system, click on "Current" to use the existing driver
39. Select the Port that matches your hardware configuration (typically 530h)
40. Select the Interrupt that matches your hardware configuration (typically 5)
41. Select the Duplex that matches your hardware configuration (typically Full)
42. Select the DMA channels that match your hardware configuration (typically 1, 0)
43. Click on "OK"
44. Click on "Don't Restart Now"
45. Click on the "Add" button
46. Click on "Low level Wave, MIDI and AUX support" from the list of drivers
47. Click on "OK"
48. If told the MMDRV.DLL driver is already on your system, click on "Current" to use the existing driver
49. Click on "Don't Restart Now"
50. Click on the "Add" button
51. Click on "MPU-401 Compatible Driver" from the list of drivers
52. Click on "OK"
53. If told the MPU401.DLL driver is already on your system, click on "Current" to use the existing driver
54. Select the Port that matches your hardware configuration (typically 330h).
55. Select the Interrupt that matches your hardware configuration (typically 9).
56. Click on "OK"
57. Click on "Restart Now"
58. Start Windows NT v4.0 once again - MIDI is now configured to run under Windows NT 4.0 with Service Pack 3 installed.
