TP 770/E/ED - Enabling Video-Out to a TV

Applicable to: World-Wide

Below are instructions on how to attach your ThinkPad 770 to a TV. The ThinkPad 770 requires the Enhanced Video Adapter to be installed to support the video-out capabilities.

1.) Attach the video-in/out Cable to the video-out jack (middle of the three jacks). Make sure it is pushed all the way in.
2.) Attach a composite or S-Video cable from video-in/out cable to the appropriate TV video-in connector. Make sure the TV is set to external input. Refer to the user's manual for your television for instructions on how to do this.
3.) To enable video-out, select the ThinkPad icon, select ThinkPad Configuration, select Device Configuration, then Enhanced Video/MPEG. For "video-out port (TV out)", select Enable.
4.) You will get the message "Warning - When you use the video-out the external display will be disabled. Please make sure a TV is connected to the video-out connector", select OK.
5.) The TV should now display the ThinkPad screen's contents.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
You can not display the computer output on the LCD and TV at the same time. To switch between LCD and TV, use
Fn+F7. Select Fn+F7 several times to switch back and forth.

If you can not see any output on the TV, the color standard may be incorrect; so select NTSC or PAL (choose the
appropriate color standard for your country; US and Japan use NTSC).

When using a TV you have two more configuration choices. While the image is on the TV, you can select Overscan, (overscan
displays the image in normal size on the TV which usually causes some of the edges to not be displayed), or Underscan
(underscan displays the whole screen image on the TV which may cause some distortion). Selecting overscan or underscan
is dynamic (does not require a reboot).

The other configuration choice is flicker free. Selecting On eliminates flicker on a TV while selecting Off is useful for
better quality of full-screen images such as MPEG and AVI.

To disable video-out, select Fn+F7 so the LCD screen is visible. For "video-out port (TV out)", select Disable,
select OK, then Fn+F7 if the LCD screen goes blank. Select Cancel, then close the ThinkPad Configuration window.

You can also connect the ThinkPad to your VCR so that you can record images from your ThinkPad on your VCR. Simply follow the instructions above, but connect the ThinkPad to the VCR instead of the TV. If you want to record audio as well, you will need to run a cable from the audio out connector on your ThinkPad to the audio in connector on your VCR.
