Aptiva - How to enter the correct telephone area code

1. This will set the modem properties so the area code need not be entered each time a phone number is dialed. This procedure covers the Windows 95 operating system only.

2. Click on the "Start" button and go to "Settings" and "Control Panel". Click on "Control Panel".

3. The Control Panel Window will open up. Scroll down until the Modem Icon is shown. Double-click on the "Modem" Icon to open the Modem Properties Window.

4. In the Modem Properties Window, the General Tab should be forward by default. If it is not forward, click on the "General Tab".

5. With the General tab forward, the modem installed in the machine should be highlighted. If the modem is not highlighted, click on the modem to select it. When the modem is selected, click the "Dialing Properties" button. This will open up the dialing properties sheet that is shown below.

6. Edit the Area Code field to match the telephone area code where the computer is located. Click on the box and enter the appropriate area code. In the example shown above, the area code is 919.

7. Click on the "OK" button to go back to the modem properties sheet. Click on "OK" button again to close the Modem's properties window and to complete the area code reset.

8. The system is now prepared to allow any Windows 95 application to automatically set the area code. If the area code changes, this procedure will have to be repeated.
