Aptiva - HP4c+ Scanner Suspend/Rapid Resume Hangs

Applicable to: World-Wide

Symptom:
If the HP4c SCSI and the HP4c software are installed in an Aptiva, the mouse cannot be moved after suspend and rapid resume. The problem cannot be solved by enabling the "reinitialize the adapter" option in the System BIOS.

Problem Isolation Aids:
None

Fix:
The HP4c SCSI card driver is not an Advance Power Management (APM) compliant driver. The SCSI cards tend to have their own memory which stores the states of the various devices. A re-inititialization of the card does not restore those values. An APM driver would store the necessary data at a suspend and restore it on the resume.

If the customer needs the rapid resume/suspend feature, then one should disable SCSI driver in WIN95 (uncheck control panel->device manager->SCSI controller->Symbios Logic->properties->original configuration). The suspend will work OK. Of course, you then need to re-enable the driver before you use the scanner, but it does not take that much effort...

The permanent fix requires that HP delivers an APM SCSI driver for the SCSI card.
