TP 560X,600,770 - Slow data transfer rate on some PC Card modems when on battery power

Applicable to: World-Wide

SYMPTOM:
When using IBM PC Card Modem FRU 42H4326 with the 600 or 770 while on AC the transfer rate is fine. If you unplug the AC your transfer rate drops to near zero. This has also been seen on the Hayes Optima 33.6 modem, but not on other 28.8, 33.6, or 56K modems tested. Other modems which use the same or similar internal components as these affected modems may also show the problem.

CONFIGURATION:
This symptom can be seen on any 600 or 770 model, but has not been noticed on 380/385 systems, and it may or may not be dependent on operating system. Using or not using the CardWorks PC Card drivers from SystemSoft does not impact the problem.

SOLUTION:
The problem is a sensitivity with the chipset of these particular modems to the CPU power management used by the Thinkpad. Other modems tested do not seem to be affected.

The solution is to load Thinkpad Configuration version 4.12 or higher (located on the ThinkPad Utility diskette), as well as the latest Utility Data Diskette appropriate for the machine, and then do the following:

1) Run the application, "Thinkpad Configuration" from the Thinkpad Program Group
2) Start the Power Management icon
3) From the "Power Mode" tab, select "Battery High Performance"
4) From the "Advanced" tab select "CPU Power Management - Disable"
5) Accept the changes and restart the system.

This will eliminate this problem, however battery life may be adversely affected.

To download the latest Utility diskette for your system, visit our ThinkPad Device Driver File Matrix.
